Texting Pictures Question

New user here, sorry if this has been covered elsewhere but I couldn't' find it. Whenever I try to text a picture there is a message that comes up saying the file is too large and it automatically resizes the picture to postage stamp size. Is there an easy way to modify that functionality to allow me to send a more usefully sized picture.

Thanks for the response but that isn't really what I am looking for. Handsent is set to 300k attachment size so when I send it gives a message to resize the pic. I agree to the message and it shows up full screen (landscape) in both handsent and default message app. When I send the same pic with 500k size limit through default message app it resizes it smaller so that when I rotate to landscape it does not fill the screen. Try it yourself with a full res photo that you took on the phone and the default message app.

I like to send quick photo mms stuff to my family and friends so 1.2MB is way to big especially for those without smart phones. If I want to send a higher res image I will email it. Thanks in advance and let me know your findings.

I tested this. you are correct, it does the same to me. changed a 1952x3264 1.85MB image to a 15k image... if I send something smaller than 1.2MB then it's fine... I think there needs to be some kind of option to choose the resize parameters.

I did find that if you go into a new message and attach/picture/camera that the size is set to 640x480 and not whatever you have the default camera size set to.

update: I went into photo's and cropped that same 1.85MB image, but I selected the whole image to crop. The resolution is the same, but the size is less than half at 670KB now! Some obvious compression now when you zoom in on the image, but for a mms it would be fine. So we know the compression ability is built in, it's just not being properly applied.

ok ive been playing with this too, cuz i would try to send a large file but it would resize it to 21kb... and where is was small on the screen like you guys said.
I then would go into my pictures and crop the same pic, maybe a little smaller then the normal pic and then would try to send it and was able to send the pic at 1101kb. Now I dont know why I have it saved for max 1.2 mb and it sends it so much smaller... but cropping it and sending, was able to do a large pic... im going continue to play with it

I fear you are right when you say it has the ability but it just isn't using it correctly. I think that a phone to phone mms doesn't need to be at 1.2MB or higher. Especially when its to somebody without a good smart phone. I think I may have to use handsent as by default it does compress correctly. Let me know if you find out a way to use the default message as I would prefer to just use that app.

When you go to send an MMS message, and you attach a picture to it, it resizes the picture IF it is larger than the size you have specified in settings. Like if you set the maximum file size for MMS messages to be 1.2mb (the largest you can select), and the picture you are trying to send is larger (say, 2.3mb for a typical 8mp high quality photo), it will drastically resize to something like 20kb.

To circumvent this, you can do one of two things.

After taking a picture, crop it. You can crop it the full size of the picture, and it will compress the image down to about 700kb-1mb or so. When sending THIS image, it will not be resized.

The other option is to set your camera to something like 5mp and fine (instead of 8 and high). This is the most convenient way to do it, as long as you mostly use your camera for MMSing. When you occasionally want to capture a "keeper", just remember to dial it back up to 8mp and high.

So I tried the other SMS products and they still sent the postage stamp sized picture. I tried lowering the camera setting to 5 meg and that picture that I sent was still tiny. I guess resizing is the only option but it really is not a viable option considering that 99.9% of the pictures I have ever sent I've sent from the camera picture review function.

The real problem that needs to be addressed is that you have no control over the resizing... an 8 meg picture is auto-resized to 14 kb even when your settings are for 1.2 meg. That is ridiculously stupid. The cap size needs to be raised from 1.2 to 5 or 8 and the resize needs to be user controlled.

Did you also set it to "Fine" instead of "High"? 5mp fine pictures should almost always be under 1.2mb, and therefore won't be resized. Then the only time you'll have to dial it back up to 8mp and High would be when you want to take some sort of meaningful picture.

I tested this sending a 5mp fine picture to my girl's iPhone which was sitting next to me. The iPhone received the picture (which took a while since it was about 900kb in size), and it was full screen and could be pinch-zoomed in on quite a bit. I didn't actually check the file size on her phone, but any further reduction in size would have happened over the network (either on Verizon's outgoing end or ATTs incoming end).
