I see different numbers on this phone everywhere (androidphones.com says OMAP3430 600MHz processor and on this forum I have heard 1GHz snapdragon processor... I have also heard both 500mb and 16gb internal memory...), so what's the real deal? Lets make a chart:

Processor is the same as in the N900, i dont know what it is exactly
Screen is 3.7"
We can safely assume it has Wi-Fi being the powerhouse it is
I think the battery is 1390Mah.

Im fairly sure there is no 1Ghz Snapdragon

I hate that this has the 550MHz processor. I might just go for the HTC Desire now since it has the same cpu most likely and will probably cost less.

Some more insight please, is the driod running off of 550MHz Cortex A8? compared with ARM 11 528MHz ? (hero) whats the bloody different in plain english? :D


dedicated graphics? would that help in eclair? since its such a dull U.I ? it isn't like HTC Sense where it has flashy graphics to show the weather etc, i suppose with a screen that large, you would need dedicated graphics.

How about a digital compass?

Basically, you can expect the Cortex A8 to perform 3-4 times the tasks in the same cycle as the Arm 11, so the phone will be much faster in everything it does. It also offloads the graphics tasks to the dedicated graphics processor, making it faster and providing smoother/better animations, transparencies, shadows, etc.

If the arm 11 were a road, it would be a single lane. The cortex a-8 would be 3 or 4 lanes, along with a dedicated bicycle lane. Going the same speed, you get 3 or 4 times the cars in the same time period, plus the dedicated bike lane keeps the bikes from slowing down the cars and is optimized to get bikes through as quickly as possible.

In simplest terms, the cortex a-8 is much faster than the arm 11 processor.

Edit to add: Yes, it has both a compass and an accelerometer.

People are getting all worked up about the Mhz of the processor.. it's kind of crazy. All of the sudden everybody on the interwebz is a computer chip engineer specialist!

Does it really matter? You need to take the whole design into consideration... and since nobody hear that I've heard from yet actually worked on designing this device... your words are only so valuable.

So what if the thing only had a 100Mhz processor?! If you pick the thing up and it runs screaming fast and can emulate a Playstation 3 in software... are you going to avoid buying it because you refuse to own a device with any chips running under 600Mhz? It's just dumb. The actual performance of the device seems a lot more important to me than that one number.

Motorolla has been around a long time... and Google isn't that dumb... they supposedly worked together on this thing... the collective brains of those two companies are probably a bit more talented at designing hardware than random internet armchair engineers sending posts from their mom's basement.

Why don't we all wait till we have the device in our hands before we make judgement calls! (And sorry.. I'm not really yelling at anybody in this thread... I've just been reading tons of posts about this stuff lately and I guess I just needed to vent a bit. :)

Same here. I'm about as educated on chips as the internet can make me, and honestly I put about as much stock in that knowledge as wikipedia. I for one am waiting until I can get my own hands on anything before I make any decisions or opinions. Though it's hard to keep from getting excited, as this is the first phone on VZW in a long time that has actually piqued my interest.

I only pointed out the spelling thing as some less savory characters out in the intertubes have no ability to see past that and understand a good point. Though I will say I haven't seen that here, thank goodness.

The Hero uses an Arm processor. This uses an OMAP plus it has dedicated graphics. You cannot compare the processor speeds for performance. It's like comparing a pentium cpu to a core 2 duo.

That's what I was coming to ask about. I had heard that this is a much snappier and better processor, which is what initially got me interested in it. I was originally going to get a Hero, but I think this is the better option for me.

Wow. This is a great way to explain it. As I mentioned in another forum, I spent 4 hours with both of these phones. Ufortunately certain specs were not released. They definitely do not have the same processor. Both phones were very responsive but the Droid was a beast. You can open everything and switch around with live updating on all the widgets, and no lag. I'm trying my best not to slober on my keyboard as I write this.

After the training, I have done my best to try and find a dealbreaker for me and this phone. I have been unsuccessful. So I'm gonna have to buy this phone on release.
