Text while Driving

Handscent SMS does this already. It will read it to you and you can even speak and it will type it out for you. TTS.

Whenever I tried to have it d/l and install the TTS package, it failed. Granted, I didn't look into it more than seeing a "not found" and moving on. Can the necessary resources be found in the market?

I did try the Speech to Text function and had zero luck getting it to type anything close to what I was saying (except profanity towards the end of the test, which it filtered into ###s). Have you had much luck with it?

Its not just the act of texting while driving that causes accidents but the switching of your attention off the road and onto something else.

Thus an app that is going to "read" you your text messages will still divert your attention and might get you, or someone else, killed.

Ignore your phone while driving. Totally. Period.

A phone reading to you, or you reading to a phone to talk back is no more distracting than passengers in your car. Or using a turn-by-turn GPS system. By your logic you should never drive anyone around and GPS systems should be banned.

Dont forget radios, billboards and smoking.

We all know the dangers of changing a radio station, but the act of listening to one.... now thats the real danger.

I mean really, they should outlaw billboards. It forces us to take our eyes off the road, even if only briefly.

Everyone knows that smoking kills... nuff said.:D

Those 8-track players are a HUGE distraction...why with all that storage space needed and searching for the right one...and do NOT force it in upside down!!!

Nope, its not the same. You can get an emotionally charged text message that could very much upset you or get you ecstatic with joy. A GPS giving you directions is unemotional.

Oh yeah, passengers can be VERY distracting. Just today I had to avoid an accident due to a car weaving across highway lanes. When we passed them we can see him having a very animated discussion with the passenger.

Guess you haven't had the joy of the GPS trying to make you turn right into a line of trees? Or sending you 20 miles out of your way when you could've just gone around the block

You're completely missing the whole point of the sarcasm in the last few posts. I agree that anything that takes your hands off the wheel or eyes off the road for extended periods of time (talking when holding the phone on your ear or text messaging) is bad. But bitching and complaining about the distractions of voice activated or talking devices is pointless. If you ban them or put them down, then there's no logical reason why you shouldn't also ban passengers and car radios.
