Maps without Internet

To continue a bit on this thread, I have this question/suggestion to the Maps App Developers:

What if you are'nt connected to a WiFi/3G/... network and you wanna use you GPS function?
Is there a function that makes it possible to save the map/direction data when you got directions? Would be nice, when you enter From and To, he saved all the direction data and map data around the way you are about to take. When you internet connections falls out on your way, you can't get lost.

Would also be usefull to save batterie you can put off you 3G and/or WiFi while using the GPS function.

I would like to see the map of the US (or whatever country you are in) stored on the SD and the GPS accesses the maps when you want to (when out of range of 3G or wi-fi). This way when you are out if BF boonies, with only edge if you are really lucky, you can still use a map.
