Handcent SMS Ads

Its really annoying that this app is full of adverts!
 It is? Where? What version are you using?
I'm on v2.9.29 and I haven't ever seen a single ad anywhere in that app!

Anyone know a way to disable them all? :p
1) Be a bad sport and use a custom firewall to block the ad-bearing hosts, or
2) Be a good sport and uninstall any apps where you feel that the ads outweigh the benefits of having the app. There are plenty of alternatives, both free and paid.

Sorry, but as evil as ads are, they do provide a benefit to users (it being that otherwise those apps would be paid-only).

"Full of adverts"? What are you, a ChompSMS dev trying to get more customers? There is exactly one ad, it's on the settings menu, and takes up about 1cm of space. It's probably the least intrusive ad I've ever seen, in any medium

Very true. I barely even notice it. just think how many times your in the settings menu. After your set it up, barely.

As KlaymenDK posted, you can block them with a firewall app. That will only stop the ad being downloaded, there will still be a white bar there instead of it. There is no way to completely remove it without access to the source code.

No, instead you make patently false claims against an "application or developer "

Big, you are the reason I joined these forums!
(hence the referral)

But you are absolutely right. I configured handcent maybe twice. Once to confirm what type of chat I wanted to use, and then a second to test different colors. Hell, I even like the app so much I clicked on the ad, just to make sure handcent_admin gets my 5 cents!

Accidental clicks or on purpose clicks, I really like the app, and If I keep it from becomming a paid app for that much longer, I've done my part =]

I don't mind ads. A similar sized ad at the bottom in bright blue and red flashing and stuff would be just fine. But the sneaky implementation that attempts to appear as a message and is slightly delayed at app launch to make me click it when I mean to click the top message is just complete bullshit. I've contacted the advertiser to let them know they've paid for several clicks from me after being misled and that I'm never buying their game but I will continue to waste their time every time my time is wasted.

The newest update to the app has added full screen ads when you open the app as well as displaying ads disguised as texts. They offer a monthly subscription option to remove the ads.

That being said, i haven't updated the app and don't plan to do so any time soon.

Some popular alternatives I've seen suggested are Textra and Chomp SMS.

There we'll just have to agree to disagree ;)

You do realise that there had been no posts in this thread since 2012 before you replied though?

Who do you contact for this? Handcent, sure, as they are using that ad mechanism. It's less obvious that the game developer whose app is being advertised will have any idea how Handcent is integrating the ads. Or do you contact the advertising service that Handcent are using?

In any event, "I will continue to waste their time every time my time is wasted" is just an invitation for them to block your email address, in which case you will only be wasting your own time. Just replace the app with one that doesn't waste your time. The thing that will alter their behaviour is falling income, so as others have said if enough people uninstall and give one star reviews that is the thing that will make them rethink.
