How Much Free Memory Do You Normally Have?

Just curious what you guys normally have freed up on your phones, since this is normally a way of speeding things up a bit. I've been reading today about how Task Killers are somewhat counter-intuitive and do not help with battery life. So I deleted and I'm now thinking about not having enough free memory... Figures.

Anyways, I'm 25mb right now, and I've hovered between there and about 125mb today. I'm curious what you guys are normally seeing. If I'm not using a task killer, is there something else you might recommend to keep things running smoothly?

Android intentionally uses your RAM to its fullest. Even if you are not using them, it will put apps in memory that it thinks you might need just incase you do. They are not using any CPU power or slowing down your phone at all while sitting there. In fact it will speed it up because if you go to launch that application it will already be loaded.

Just because an app is loaded into RAM does not mean it is necessarily "running"

Right, I get that now. But I still believe that the amount of free RAM does affect overall system performance. I'm not worried about having things running in the background, but I'm curious if 25mb of free memory sounds low for an Incredible. That's why I was asking what others are getting.

Sorry, but you'd be wrong. RAM is specifically designed to move information in and out/change it extremely fast. That's it's entire purpose.

Now, if all of the currently running apps fill up your RAM, that's another story. Running out of RAM will cause problems.

However, if any of it is not actively running ( and honestly I think on the INC it could actually be difficult to use up all of the RAM. ) it can easily be overwritten for something else that is trying to use it now. Again, this is the purpose of RAM. New data can be inserted at any point in the RAM, overwrite anything, or write to a new section...all at the same speed.

PS: I run mostly stock and I still only have about 100 meg free. Don't worry about it unless you get a message that there is not enough memory.

Also, if I ever need to shut something down, I first try to do it inside the app itself. If that doesn't work, I go into settings->Applications->Manage Applications. Press Menu->Filter->Running. Then you can go through and close what you want. This should be a last resort though. Whenever you do this, or use a task killer...there is no clean up. Cache, Memory ( yes, RAM ), etc are not cleared properly. The App stops immediately. This is why it is not recommended to use any task killers, because all of that junk can add up over time, and the app killer itself uses power and resources when most of the time the offending program was actually idle and not using any by itself. ( Most of the time...there have been plenty of issues where apps are getting stuck awake. )

^^^ I don't think I said anything that specifically contradicts what you stated above, but I do appreciate the thoughtful comment. That helps.

The only reason I got a little concerned is that I noticed a slight lag today on my keyboard when typing. Really nothing significant, but still noticeable. This thing is still 100 times faster than any hand held Apple product I've owned. I'm still trying to learn the nuances of Android. So far so good.

Glad it helps..and I was mostly just commenting about "But I still believe that the amount of free RAM does affect overall system performance.":)

As for the keyboard lag, who knows what caused it. If it doesn't go away, try shutting the phone off and turning it back on. Something might have hit a bug, and is choking for some reason.

Can't be stressed enough...free RAM does nothing for you here.

This is ingrained in your head because of MS Windows, which does indeed just love having as much spare RAM sitting around as you can throw at it.

*nix based OSes don't work the same way. They have absolutely no use for any more RAM than they currently require for the tasks at hand.
