Google Goggle

Have anybody tried Google Goggles? Looks like a cool app that lets you search using images captured from your phone camera.

An interesting feature is that it captures images, scans images for text, and then translates text into another language... Really useful for traveling I suppose?

I haven't tried it out yet so don't know how accurate are the translations / image to text conversions. Does anybody have experience with this app?

This apps rocks. Its my favorite app by Google so far. Definitely worth the download. Text translations are pretty accurate too.

It would be nicer if the app could also do text to speech and read back the text to you in another language.

This app blows my mind. I scanned a Comcast universal remote control and it identified it as such... pulled up pictures, Googled it, etc.

Google Googles is worth the download if nothing more than for the Business card reader. It takes a pic of the Biz card, scans it, and turns that into a contact. LOVE THAT.

Yet another application for Google Goggles: Face Recognition
Apparently privacy campaigners forced Google to remove face recognition feature on google goggles.
I wonder whether it is really possible to search for a person's identity just from a picture of that person... using an Android phone. We've all seen this on movies and the CIA / FBI use supercomputers to scan people's face. Maybe in the future every phone is able to do this? Cool...

It's very cool. Hold the phone sideways and it becomes an Augmented Reality app (needs a GPS fix really). It's a bit basic compared to some of the other apps but Google have announced that Googles is going to be a major platform for them so expect more customization, tie-ins with Google maps etc soon.

oh cool i didn't know what augmented reality app is until i checked it out on wikipedia. When I turn the phone sideways facing a direction it shows the nearby street names and businesses in that direction.. Pretty neat but I don't see any real application for that. Maybe it helps pedestrians recognize which direction they are walking towards?

My only frustration is that it seems to use google.com, rather than the phone default, which means that shopper returns US prices - pretty irrelevant if you live in the UK like me.

Anyone know any way to get the shopper element to localise to non US?

yeah maybe while scanning for prices, it should also add the functionality of converting prices to other currency, or show you the price of that item being sold in other countries

Yeah, helps you find cinemas, tube stations, friend's houses etc. It's not as full-features as wikitude or layar at the mo, but if Google push it properly then it could be one of the better apps on the market. It would make sense to merge it with Google Maps, Navigator, the Sky app, Google Earth etc eventually, so you'd have one app which you'd use to interact with the real world, rather than having to flip between them.

Sounds like a good suggestion for the labs! Certainly seems like it should be on their to-do list (since most google tools conform to the google account they are linked to.)

Have you tried the amazon app. it works similarly to Goggles for finding items/prices from pics and I would think it would give you results from the amazon.uk site.

Not quite as wide a market sweep as Google, but handy to get an idea if a price you are seeing is inline with other sources.
