Root Question About Rooting The Moment

Hello,

I am a long time BlackBerry user seriously considering getting a Samsung Moment when it comes out.

I've been reading a lot about the Moment and Android in general and it looks like in order to be able to install applications in the SD card I need to root the phone.

I see myself installing a lot of applications in the device so the ability to install them in the SD card is very appealing to me.

When researching the Samsung moment, I learned that it comes with a couple of Sprint specific applications that look very interesting. Specifically Sprint TV and a Sprint proprietary GPS navigation application. It also comes with some NFL and NASCAR applications but those I don't really care about.

My question is, if I root the phone, would I lose the Sprint specific applications? If so, any way to get them back?

I can't say for sure, but I would think it's unlikely you'll lose any current applications. I would assume that with a rooted phone, you can move those Sprint apps to the SD Card as well.

Thanks, hopefully there's a way to extract the applications somehow before rooting the phone, then installing them right back after installing the modded operating system.

That would really depend on how Sprint has those apps put in. You would think that you could remove Sprints apps if they functioned like normal apps. However, you cant remove, discard or otherwise clean these out of your phone.

Let me ask this.....because the Moment comes with stock Android.....just like the G1. Does that mean there is probably a method for rooting already. I know that the phone is not out yet ...but does it seem likely?

I would think it would, as long as there wasnt changes to the kernel like HTC did with the Hero. Its entirely possible that it would be very similar.

As far as rooting I imagine it will be a month or so, maybe more, until it's done. But the thing that can stop that is how Samsung has set up the Bootloader, if its locked then you might be waiting awhile. I know the Motorola CLIQ has a locked bootloader which is slowing down the process of getting root on it, but I wouldn't worry much people because someone always finds a way to do it. You will enjoy the phone in its stock form for awhile.

Also to the OP, rooting doesn't remove any apps, if anything it adds a few. Now unless Sprint had Samsung do something crazy (which I completely doubt) then you should be fine. Another thing though is ROM flashing, if and when they figure out how to do it, you WILL lose any official Sprint apps and any you've downloaded. The way it works is the ROM chef puts in whatever apps he wants, which will be all the basics minus any proprietary stuff unless he/she is willing to risk getting in trouble with Sprint. Actually if you do some research on Google vs Cyanogen you will see how they recently sent him a C&D letter because he was including Google apps, which are free in the market, but not open source.

Bah I am going on and on, just have to wait and see.
