It has been rumored for a little while now that Sprint was going to issue a official

2.1 upgrade for the HTC Hero, either on April 29th or by the end of April. But the hackers at XDA Developers forum have done it again by leaking a Sprint HTC Hero test ROM marked RUU_Hero_C_Sprint_2.20.651.1_signed_test. RUU stands for Radio Unit Update, and is a common package that HTC phones of all kinds use, from Windows Mobile updates to Android Roms. It not only flashes the ROM, but the hboot and upgrades your radio.img.
This is leaked test ROM isn’t for the beginner, or non-experienced android user. It isn’t a simple flash update or signed.zip (not yet at least I’m sure someone will compile it soon, if someone already hasn’t). You cannot extract it, the rom is a test release and still has root. If any Sprint Hero owners want to try out the new Android 2.1 with SenseUI and can’t wait till possibly the end of the month (I know I would if I still had my Hero), head over to XDA and read whole thread carefully, and follow the instructions. Remember if you brick your device, you can’t hold any accountable but yourself. [via

UPDATE: Just like I thought, a member at XDA has compiled a update.zip ROM from
RUU_Hero_C_Sprint_2.20.651.1_signed_test.exe. You must have a rooted Hero, and you can flash via recovery. Just like any other ROM, This way is a lot safer, and the average rooted user can now enjoy the stock Android 2.1 update for Hero. You can
