that seem to be this one

It has been rumored for a little while now that Sprint was going to issue a official Android

2.1 upgrade for the HTC Hero, either on April 29th or by the end of April. But the hackers at XDA Developers forum have done it again by leaking a Sprint HTC Hero test ROM marked RUU_Hero_C_Sprint_2.20.651.1_signed_test. RUU stands for Radio Unit Update, and is a common package that HTC phones of all kinds use, from Windows Mobile updates to Android Roms. It not only flashes the ROM, but the hboot and upgrades your radio.img.

This is leaked test ROM isn’t for the beginner, or non-experienced android user. It isn’t a simple flash update or signed.zip (not yet at least I’m sure someone will compile it soon, if someone already hasn’t). You cannot extract it, the rom is a test release and still has root. If any Sprint Hero owners want to try out the new Android 2.1 with SenseUI and can’t wait till possibly the end of the month (I know I would if I still had my Hero), head over to XDA and read whole thread carefully, and follow the instructions. Remember if you brick your device, you can’t hold any accountable but yourself. [via XDA Developers]
UPDATE: Just like I thought, a member at XDA has compiled a update.zip ROM from RUU_Hero_C_Sprint_2.20.651.1_signed_test.exe. You must have a rooted Hero, and you can flash via recovery. Just like any other ROM, This way is a lot safer, and the average rooted user can now enjoy the stock Android 2.1 update for Hero. You can download the ROM from XDA Developers.

Yes, that is the leaked version and to call it buggy as shit is really an ignorant comment to make. I'm not saying that in a mean way, just in a way that anyone who would say that hasn't had experience with it, hence the ignorance. All the custom 2.1 ROMs are based off this and when it was released it actually had many fewer bugs than the custom ROMs since nobody had tried to take stuff from other phones and tried to patch it into this one yet.

Having said that, no it isn't perfect, but to be honest when I went from Fresh 2.0d to the leaked RUU my phone was almost perfect. A few quirks here and there but I honestly can't think of any reason to call the leaked RUU anything but the best available official version for the Hero. Most people could probably flash this and never regret upgrading to it as long as they have their phone. Of course if you are one of the folks that switch ROMs every week then it may not be for you.

bstep, and anyone else who may have installed this RUU version of 2.1, I suggest you check out the thread we have in this forum on the RUU.

Here you will find info you might need to get certain things working the way you want. There are a few issues that are not bugs, but that you may want to change. One being the marketplace fix that I explained in the above posted thread. See, just as the file name stated, this release was signed with test keys since it was an internal testing build. In the market you can't view or download protected apps if you are using a phone that is not signed with production keys. So I explained how to fix this by modifying one file.

Another issue, one you mentioned, is live wallpapers. Basically, HTC isn't putting them in the Hero Sense, unless something has changed since the last I heard. So the custom ROMs with live wallpapers are using modified launchers and modified versions of other phone's UI. The easiest way for you, since you installed the RUU, to get live wallpapers is to download the Helix Launcher from the market and then get the wall paperpicker apk I posted in the above thread. Once you do those things you will have live wallpapers in helix launcher but not in sense. Although to be honest, Helix is a fine launcher, very fast and has many benefits over sense also. :)

Thanks for that great response and I am thinking on trying this now. Would you tell of any reason you wouldn't do this? And if I do would I be able to update it when Sprint sends out there update? Is the a root and if so any instructions

The RUU is one file you download and it wipes everything on the phone and updates the Radio, hboot and everything. The new hboot, if used on the final release, will make rooting more difficult but it is just a matter of time. This version that was leaked is actually a test version and has root already. Personally I installed this and don't regret it, but I am also somewhat familiar with linux and with changing/fixing things on my phone. So I am comfortable with doing things myself.

Using this method to go to 2.1 is the quickest and easiest way to get there. That said, in the future when Sprint finally releases the official 2.1 there is always a chance they will make it harder for anyone who used this version to update to the official version. Personally I don't see that as a problem because the official version will be filled with bloatware and not be optimized like you can do with a rooted phone or even just by flashing a custom ROM where someone else has optimized for you.

If you just want 2.1 and just want it now, this is an option. If however you want 2.1 and you want to be able to tinker with the phone and/or swap out custom ROMs and so on, then it is probably better to root the phone first, flash recovery and then test out the other custom ROMs. Really it is a decision YOU must make, and since it affects your phone you should probably take a look at xda and see if you want one of those custom ROMs, want live walpapers, want friendstream, want all the other stuff that is not coming to the Hero when 2.1 does. Hope that helps. :)

As far as I know, it is not a rooted update, so you will be able to move forward with the 2.1 release if you chose to do so, WHEN/IF it comes out :D
And thanks xbrokdikdogx for your input, I will be sure to check out the thread!

Actually the RUU is rooted, it is a tester version. As for when the official 2.1 update comes out, it will be in the form of a new RUU. Regardless of whether you are rooted or not when the new RUU comes out if you just want the official final 2.1 from Sprint then you will download it from sprint.com/downloads like everyone else and then run the file. It won't matter what your phone looks like now, rooted or unrooted, everything will be wiped. The only way the final version update should not work to replace this test version is if Sprint/HTC put an older hboot image in the final RUU. Since they put a newer one in the test version if the final has an older one it will not replace the newer hboot and that will be a problem that will have to be worked out by the devs at xda before you can run the new final version.

I have been running the ruu since it came out. It is mostly reliable. I did the market fix and then a few other steps (installing superuser apk) to fully root it so I could run wireless tether- really the only thing I want it rooted for. It is more responsive than 1.5 and can run 2.1 apps like goggles. The speed improvements and ability to run 2.1 apps are worth it- I got tired of waiting for Sprint.

if that is the only bug, I can live with that. but I tried it and didn't have an issue.

I installed it this morning and I have to say it is great. no real issues I have found at all. I can't say I have seen any better speeds. but I have never had a problem with speeds with the old 1.5 but I used an app killer to fix that.

There is a problem with the dialer in this test Rom. If you dial an automated phone system like a bank, when you input numbers like in a menu tree. It will open another line, and try to dial the numbers you enter. So beware of that beforehand.

I too have never had that issue. I have been running the RUU since my posts in the Pre2.1 leak thread and use my phone on the automated systems a few times a week. Never seen anything like that.

I did all this and i have market issues. namely i'm trying to install the "a-online-radio" app and it wont install. I'v been fooling around with the build.prop but i'm not sure what to change. i downloaded a build.prop that was on the xda-developer site and thats the one i've been changing things in. I hope i dont mess it up to the point where i brick this phone. I've been reading forums and most say to change a 6 to a 7 but there was a 7 already there. Can anybody help me with the build.prop? I would very much appreciate it. THANKS!
