Like most people I was excited about this phone. The full qwerty keyboard and the UI seemed awesome. But then I read the specs and just saw thsi was a glorified G1.
But for $200 when myTouch was as low as $100 (oprah discount) and the Hero for $180 both which have better specs it seems unlikely this will get too many people motivated to join t-mo.

Just curious but what exactly do you consider better specs? The MT3G and Hero do not have better specs than the cliq.... The Cliq has a 5mp camera, larger battery, same CPU, more memory, 3.5mm headphone jack... if you do a side by side it is truly worth the upgrade... but you have to physically try all of them to see for yourself and personaly i like a physical keyboard so MT3G and Hero were out from the start....

check here : Motorola CLIQ - MOTOBLUR - Android phone - Motorola USA

or here: Unsupported Browser

And I own both a G1 and the Cliq and the Cliq is FAR better performance and battery life... the camera is amazingly better and even running a ton of widgets with blur the phone still goes an entire day without needing a charge under heavy use...

Actually, the hero is the only Android phone with 288 RAM. The new Fender mytouch LE is an undercover Hero. Sharing the same CPU and memory as the Hero.
The top two phone in specs right now would be the Sprint Moment with 800mhz CPU and 256mb ram. 2. The Hero with 288mb ram.

I guess it all comes down to personal opinion i traded the 288 ram for 256 ram that the cliq has to get a full qwerty and larger longer lasting battery... So personally i dont think the Hero has anything over the cliq... As for the moment which isnt released for a few more days yes it has a faster cpu, but is not better than cliq or hero in any other way... specs aside from the cpu are actually equal to or worse than both.... so each has its advantages or disadvantages... All im saying is owning a G1 and Cliq there is really no comparison performance feel or otherwise.... Cliq wins hands down... So in no way can it be called a glorified G1

With these phones it all depends on how you use them that reflects on the battery life.
I know people who have the CLIQ and complain about battery life and the ssame with the Hero.
So battery depends on the user and features.
Hardware wise. With all the set to vanilla android the Hero should be able to multitask a bit better due to the extra 22mb of ram.
The Moment CPU will def. help with opening programs and the switching of landscape to normal screen.
I'm not knocking the CLIQ. It's a nice phone, but come hardware is nothing to brag about since the hero had better specs. as far as the qwery. Well yeah, that's a plus for some. Like you, I'm a qwery guy, but with Moment and DROID around the corner I don't see the CLIQ really having too much longevity in the spotlight.
The one perk is has is the BLUR UI/Software.

I guess the issue im having with this discussion is that in your opinion better specs only relates to cpu and ram not the overall phone... having a larger battery and a full physical qwerty is a 2 to 1 win specs wise for me... yes 22 megs of ram MIGHT make a difference depending on what your running with sense since it bogs a tad more than blur but you'd have to strip the hero and cliq down to vanilla android to test that... and beleive me im not saying the cliq should even be in the spotlight for specs or for any other reason than its motorolas' first entry into android which when their second phone is release will mean nothing...

Actually the CLIQ doesn't have a bigger battery. The Hero has the largest battery at 1500mah
Moto site specs 1420mah
Sprint Hero SpECS 1500mah

Also, CDMA technology uses more battery life than GSM except on standby.

You are correct about the battery size i originally stated that against the G1 and MT3G from your first post... but again it comes down to personal opinion trade a little of this for that kinda thing... if the hero had a physical kb i'd agree it was better but it doesnt... i just think that the entire phone needs to be compared and having physically used G1, MT3G, Hero and Cliq and owning the 2 with physical keyboards i can say IMHO performance on the cliq is a tad better than the Hero and MT3G and far better than the G1 but like we both said you need vanilla android across the board to give an accurate comparison or performance judgement.... And to be completely honest I'm probably going to get another phone (still undecided) off contract to mess around with.... so when the new phones start droping coming the new year we'll se what happens i dont think the 800mhz phones will last long with the 1ghz ones around the corner most likely released mid next year...

I agree with the 800mhz phone, but it's a little difference between 800mhz and 1ghz. The thing that made the G1 slow was the lack of ram and space.
Something they have managed to fix with the rest of the phones (256mb). The only thing that dooms the Moment for me is the 3.2mp camera. I mean..really? When 5.0 seems to be a standard.

Well again it's a trade game so far no phone is really out pacing or out doing the others with overall specs... if they did we wouldnt have to research and debate anything... i mean it has the same ram and flash as the cliq, which as you pointed out is slightly less than the hero.. at this point i dont think the speed is entirely the issue like you said everything bottle necked on the g1 which they kind of fixed but if you double the ram to 512 instead of uping the cpu to 800 you'd be better off.... like i said that phone aside from the cpu has equal or worse specs than both the cliq and hero...

CPU processes the information. RAM allows for multitasking.
I have a g1 and when I use the Bluetooth (music) and try to search or use other features I'm faced with some serious lag issues.
The same thing when I use lastfm on my G1 and stream. Not to mention that I have a twitter and fb widgets and I get nasty lag. Something I noticed the Sprint Hero did not have.
That would be a good article though. Comparing vanilla androids with different phones.

I totally understand ram and cpu man... What i am saying is i dont think 256 or 288 is enough especially with the overlay of sense or blur with 512 sense and blur would have very little stress or affect on the over all system allowing for FAR more than the bost from 528 to 800mhz would do... it's be the same with a regular computer if we both had quad cores and i had a 2.4 with 8gbs of ram and you had a 2.8 with 2gbs of ram mine would perform FAR better and seem faster...

seem faster? lol it would be more responsive.

You know what i mean... i think with all the overlay ui stuff happening like sense and blur and soon to be more that ram should be more of a factor than cpu, faster helps yes but anything that is sitting there running as long as the phone is on is eating away at it... and more ram = less stress and that means better battery life more responsive and less visual lag... not saying the cpu wont help just not always the answer....and i think who ever drops the first 512 of ram will have a significant advantage over the other phones...

Yea people have got Android to work on some WinMo phones, but that's using haret and not a true ROM flash. Plus besides the touch none of them have been fully functioning, like on my Touch Pro I tried it but the sound won't work so what good is that? Hopefully HTC or others will make something like the Leo but Android powered. Heck I would love a Touch Pro 2 with Android, and a better cpu architecture.

Wow, first post here!

I've been a Blackberry user for a number of years and I just had another BB have a h/w problem and I started looking at the Android. While I am a huge Mac fan, I do not care for AT&T so the iPhone was out for me.

I checked out the Hero and the Cliq. My new Cliq arrived yesterday and while I am still figuring it all out I really like the phone. I have no issues with the responsiveness and the build quality reminds me of the old Moto days of good stuff.

I don't think less than 10% more RAM matters, and the processor seems rather snappy. I agree, it doesn't feel like a glorified G1 to me.

Here's what I think.. It's easy to get caught up in the "but something more powerful is coming up.." game. It happened to many people when PC's first started gaining popularity.. you would have people living in constant fear, that they were going to "make the wrong choice".. and literally years went by with "no PC for you.".. myTouch, Hero, Cliq, Droid.. They are all the right choice if you try one, and you like what you see.. Yes it's ok to compare specs, and pricing, and plans, and make an informed choice, but don't agonize over it. It's also crazy to beleive everyone elses opinion.. I have read in many posts that the myTouch was "laggy".. I really don't see what they are seeing.. Best bet and advice I can give, is to just go to a store and try the phones, and if you like what you see, then just get it.

What's the real difference between the Cliq and the Droid? Isn't it basically the same phone??? but T-Mobile's less expensive.....

I've had my Cliq for a couple weeks and love it. I didn't want to part with my Sidekick but I have no regrets. The Sidekick was better in some ways but is no competition.
