Very weird problem, also need help

Last night I had my phone on, unplugged when I went to sleep. The battery drained fully and I was told made a regular beeping (heavy sleeper, didn't hear it). The phone was dead when I woke up, so I plugged it in and powered it on, but for some reason the phone had completely restored itself to how it came out of the box. No contacts, emails, apps. Does anyone have any idea why/how this happened? Should I be worried about it happening again?

Also, I foolishly did not back up my phone pre-erase. Does anyone know of a program that can take contacts off of my old phone and put them on my Hero? If not, I will have to go to the Sprint store tomorrow I guess, but I'd much rather do it myself. Thanks for any help.

Your contacts should all be on the Google account you set up when you set up your phone unless you turned off the sync. You should re-associate it and have it sync the contacts. I would still talk to CS because the phone shouldn't reset itself just because it ran out of battery.

Hmmm it only synced my gmail contacts (email addresses), but not my previous phone contacts. Was it supposed to sync and save my phone numbers to the gmail contacts?

It should sync everything you put into the phone once it's tied to the account. If you add contacts it should sync them to your Google accounts.
