So I have family plan with 4 lines with ATT. One Iphone, Blackberry curve 8310, blackjack II, and Nexus 1.

Iphone has the iphone data. Blackjack II and N1 have data blocked. With the Curve 8310, I was using it without data for the past 2 years and gave the phone to my mom after I purchased the N1.

Yesterday, she gets a text saying they added the $30 data plan on it. Now, when I logged in to my account and tried to get a non-smartphone for her, I got a message stating that I can't upgrade until July 28, 2011 (same for all lines).

Is it possible for them to just renew all 4 lines for 2 years without our permission? Just a few days ago, I saw promotional prices for upgrades as I was thinking about getting a new phone and now all the phones show regular prices.

Also, is it possible to block data on the blackberry?

I can't answer to the renewal part, but AT&T has and will add the $30 per month smartphone data plan to any phones they notice on your plan that are smartphones. Your N1 included, even with data blocked. AT&T requires the $30 smartphone plan on all smartphones, with or without contract.

thanks for the reply; i know about the $30 data plan for smartphones, which is why i wanted to upgrade to a non-smartphone for my mom; but seems like they also renewed all 4 lines for next 2 years and am unable to get upgrade price

i will call up ATT and fix this issue

is there anyway i can get a hold on the Curve line as my mom just went overseas last night and won't be using the phone for the month?

I'm pretty sure you upgrade lines separately in a family plan. I know, because I went through a bunch of rigmarole when I tried to upgrade to the TP2 (back when that was my plan) at a ridiculously discounted price. They wouldn't give me the upgrade at that price b/c my line in the family plan wasn't the primary line. So there's definitely distinction as far as AT&T is concerned.

Sadly the way that AT&T works for upgrade pricing is based off how much you spend. So it you do an upgrade and get a discounted phone on a family plan more often than not it goes against the main line which in turn renews the whole account.

I just renewed 3 out of 4 of my phones, and that didn't happen with me. I think if your entire account gets renewed, it's because somebody who had no had no idea what they were doing touched your account. Sadly, that accounts for 85% of AT&T's customer service reps.

thanks for all the replies; i talked to ATT Monday and got everything settled; i believe there was a mistake/error on their system when they added the $30 data plan and it was fixed;

since my mom is overseas, ATT will credit the $30 charge for the month and when she returns, i'll have a non-smartphone waiting for her

EDIT: yes, ATT reps don't really know what is going on majority of the time; i can never get the same answer/solution from different reps; when i was trying to unlock my mom's phone, i had to call like 5 times to get it solved; they said things like, oh, we don't control the unlock code, you need to call the manufacturer; luckily, once i got a guy on the phone, he was able to give the unlock code without any hassle
