well, to install all you do is put the bootanimation.zip into /data/local. as for which is the best, are you looking for something in your face or a little more subtle?
my favorite is called midnight. it's basically the stock eye recolored with blue and darkened.
cyborg is a pretty crazy hi-res boot. there's also a bsod as well as a verbose dos style boot up animation.
I also really like the one from Chevy's Simply Stunning, which I saved to my SD card before I switched ROMs again, although I've been using the Droid Shatter since it came out.

I know, right? I've was in the middle of editing my last post when it went down, what seems like almost an hour ago, and I haven't been able to get back in since.
I'd say the easiest way is stick it on your card and use root explorer and copy and paste it into /system/media
The shatter ones is nice. I don't care much for the loop part.
There's one called Evolve I think, its pretty nice. I can't find it though.
I still have it on my computer. The file is like 45mb. It won't even fit on my phone anymore.
yea wuts up with all droid ? but the way i do it is i use and old droid root helper apk, and my favorite is the bugless beast boot animation that won the contest.... the name escapes
Is there a way to have like, a completely blank boot animation? Just a black screen? I do this with Windows as well to shorten the boot time, because even if it saves me half a second, that's half a second that I'm not staring at the stupid Windows flag I don't need to stare at.
I LOVE the redrum bootanimation. I had never seen that before just now.
I have one somewhat similar to that which I downloaded from alldroid, but I can't even remember now who did it, nor can I (for obvious reasons) link to the release thread. It was another beautiful one. I have always been a sucker for that "pc loading" effect... the scrolling command lines and such.
