If this plus the fact that we should get 2.2 first and (hopefully) long before anyone else is true then I am going to be an even happier N1 user. It really would be fun being able to sit and discuss 2.2 while everyone waits.

Basically download the Linpack app from the market check yr Mflop rating (probably about 6 - 7). Compare this to N1 running FroYo which gets a Mflop of like 40!!!!!

Rooted doesn't mean you forfeit OS updates. As a matter of fact, rooted users have been enjoying for months many of the features that will be implemented in 2.2, including but not limited to more access to RAM, 360 degrees rotation, etc.

If I understand correctly... Rooting will not stop the automatic updates as rooting will just give me full access to everything on the device. Changing to a different ROM will stop the automatic updates because the ROM would not have anything in it to check with Google for the update???

You wouldn't get the automatic updates, no, but custom ROMs will incorporate updates anyway and/or the update will leak before the official release, thus getting incorporated/released as flashable ROMs ahead of time.

I am a HUGE advocate for rooting Android phones. My Nexus One is the ONLY phone i have not rooted from day one. My HUGE issue with rooting is that there are still some really flaky things going on with Custom ROM's and:

BlueTooth
Camera/Flash
Location Services/GPS

I use all those extensively and don't want to risk it.

When I was on the G1 and MyTouch, rooting and using those ROM's were a pinch and things worked, I just don't think it's ready at the moment. Given a little more time, the great Dev's will work things out, but for now, I am just going to hang tight.

I know you and I have been going back and forth on this topic, but the issues you're citing are mostly reported by SenseUI/Modaco users and not Cyan users. And remember, if you root and find that you do have problems it is very easy to go back to stock. No harm, no fowl.

This is incredible news, every little spec of information about froyo is making me more and more anxious for it's release!
I was expecting to see some performance increase as they advertised the new JIT compiler a while back, but 200% would've been about the best I could've hoped for. The google devs are wizards

Correct me if i am wrong...if you root and then decide to go back to the stock android rom...you are still rooted and hence no OTA. What will be possible is that you will be able to manually upgrade to Froyo because the update will be donwloadable from the internet thanks to the rooting community...

That is not correct. If you're rooted and want OTA updates, you just have to put the stock ROM back on. The updates don't depend on whether the phone is rooted or not, it just depends on if you have the official stock OS (ROM) on there.

You must have an officially signed recovery to install any ota that requires use of the recovery. Amon ra cannot install an official update because it can only use test keys. Lesser updates that do not require the recovery to install can be successfully downloaded and installed unless the ota is blocked by the rom you're running. This is common to prevent an ota from possibly breaking something or causing assorted instabilities. The developer then does not have to face the outcry from a lot of irate flashers. Good developers will of course get the update and incorporate it into their roms fairly quickly. Being rooted, custom rom, custom recovery, all fairly meaningless in terms of getting the 2.2 update. Within a very short period of time you can expect to see it on xda and be able to flash it just like any other rom. No one will be left behind. I had read somewhere btw that it might not go ota and you would have to wander over to google phone to get it.

True, very true, I think I will hold off just until 2.2 drops, then see what the Dev's do.

Let's say I did root my phone but still have stock rom (absolutely needed the wifi tether app but loved the phone in its original form)......if I apply the 2.2 OTA update when it becomes available, I'm gonna have to re-root with a newer version of superboot (or whatever) for the latest build number when that becomes available, correct? And would this newer version of superboot be available soon after 2.2 release?

Just a few things.

1. Rooting community has historically gotten updates or at least features days sometimes weeks/months before standard.
EX. Apps2SD , Trackball colors ,Freed ram have been available since Early march at the very least.

2. The 450% improvement wont be across the board. Many apps you wont even notice. It will however allow certain apps that are knee deep in the OS more power to process heavy loads of info. ((ex.Flash))

3. Faster processor/more processing power doesnt necessarily equate less battery. The same exact app on a slow processor phone may actually suck up more juice since itll take it twice to 3 times as long to finish the task. Where as a fast processor may be done in a fraction of the time and return to idle. There are many other factors other than pure processing power when it comes to battery life.
