Help 720p HD Video Recording

Probably not. But if you need top of the line video recording it's probably best to get an actual video camera or camera for less than a phone on a 2yr contract.

Um . . . yeah. But have you considered the possibility that the OP already has a camcorder? Many of us have a camcorder already but that doesn't mean that we are not or should not be interested in whether a smartphone that we would buy for other reasons also has HD recording capability.

I've said it before. The EVO has an 8MP camera that will be capable of 720p. Chances that HTC sourced the same cmos sensor for the EVO as they did for the Incredible? Very good. The difference is, the Incredible software build needed to be approved for final release by the end of March. The EVO probably doesn't need to be finalized until the end of this month so even though it was demo'd at CTIA, it was still just a test version of the software. I'm guessing it'll be available to us in a future update.

and if not through an update possibly with root and some hacking

just trying to stay optomistic :)

If the hardware is so similar to the Evo, one would think the software is already in place to enable 720p recording.

My guess is the hardware isn't capable of it. It doesn't make sense for HTC/VZW to release hardware that isn't running the hardware to its fullest potential. Like if they released the DI to run only @ 500mhz when it stocks a 1gz CPU.

or a droid that is speced at 600mhz and downclock it to 550mhz?

i know they increased some video recording bit rates on the droid with root. Probably not as important as resolution though

Reading a review somewhere it said that the EVO can record 720p due to two things: the camera quality and a part of the SoC (System on chip) in the Snapdragon processor chip. I think the EVO and Incredible have the exact same camera and Snapdragon SoC chip so it may just be a software/firmware thing.

I think they may hold it back if they found that the quality, although 720p, had a crappy fps. Even though it can do it, it might not be able to do it good. And the way we are, we would all be complaining on the forums about how crappy the 720p is and some would say they are returning their phones because of it. LOL :D
