[SOLUTION]Cannot add Google account after factory reset

Thanks! I have an old Sony Xperia x10 mini running on CyanogenMod 7.2. I thought I would see what I could do with the phone even with the limited 256MB memory for applications... Especially since Google Play Services was often taking over 100MB, I would run into problems now and then. Not sure how related it was, but even though I had connection to the Internet, I couldn't get Google Play to work. Usually, after clearing cache or data, I was able to get it to work, but then it happened again and I wasn't able to get it to work. Without being able to remove all Google accounts without resetting the phone to factory defaults, I was hoping to find another solution... and this one worked like a charm! If you have root access, then you'll be able to modify the hosts file. I already had Root Browser, so I just used its text editor to modify the hosts file and it worked like a charm! Thanks!

I've been having a problem with editing host, it doesn't allow me to save the edit at all. It only says that it's unable to save.

I have a Kyocera rise on virgin mobile
running Android 4.0.4(Ice Cream Sandwich)

After a hard reset my whole ill not allow me to add my google account to my phone...it gives an error "Can't establish a reliable connection to the servers"
I have tried multiple solutions to no avail..Heres a list of what I tried already
1.Another hard reset..(same prob)
2.the youtube/gmail login trick(it let me login to gmail just fine but when trying to sign into youtube it does the same thing as adding my google account)
3.Changing vpn settings(my phone does not have this option under mobile networks setting)
4.Tried just using wifi(same prob)
5.tried using just 3g(same prob)
6.take out sim card and try with wifi only(phone dont use sim cards)
No clue what else to try

HELP!

[EDIT]FIXED!! Shortly after I posted this question I found forum post that helped me fix this annoying problem.

Please do it at your own risk.

How to do it:

1.- Root your device (of course)

2.- Editing the file

You will need a proper editor
On your device open your browser and go to: Total Commander - Android
Download and Install Total Commander for Android... and open it
OR DOWNLOAD BELOW

3.- Browse with Total Commander to root/etc
(hint: on the right side of the screen there's a shortcut to system folder.. look for etc/ and you will find it)
Long tap on "hosts" > edit file > Totalcmd-Editor

Open etc/hosts and edit the file. Just put # before 74.125.93.113 android.clients.google.com.

4.- SAVED

Edited file should look like this:

127.0.0.1 localhost
#74.125.93.113 android.clients.google.com

remember: based on my own observation it should be look like this:

127.0.0.1(just one space)localhost
#74.125.93.113(just one space)android.clients.google.com

5.- Turn OFF your device.

6. Reboot your device.

7. Once the phone reboots, input your google account information when the phone asks for it.

Done!

Now you can connect to Google Play!
Thanks a lot

Thank you very much for your post! I'm sure this will be the solution after searching and reading on internet without success.

However, I'm still one step away from the solution.

I downloaded Total Commander Android on my phone (since my Google Play is not working I used Internet to download). It says 'Installed', but I can't find anywhere on the phone this app (I did reboot the phone and went into application manager to look). I appreciate if anyone can help. Thanks in advance!

Here is the app itself, its totally safe..enjoy it.

Thank you! I have downloaded the file and was able to install it on my phone.

When I open the file 'hosts', it only contains the first line: 127.0.0.1 localhost. And I can't save the file, got "Error writng to file: /etc/hosts" message. Is there any setup I can do to be ale to edit the file? Thanks.
