i may be mistaken but most people seem to want to root for the tethering and apps to ad ability, if 2.2 can do that is there really a need to root anymore?

personally i probably will root just because that's who i am and i want to remap the wake up button to the tracpad

but my question is, will most people that wanted to root, will you still root after 2.2?

No matter what improvements the next versions of Android bring they will never make rooting obsolete.

I totally agree. While "Android" may be an open platform, the devices running Android are hardly open unless root is accessible wihout hacks. Even if I don't have a reason today, who knows what I might want to do with my device tomorrow. ("Freedom!")

2.2 will allow for tethering and using the phone as a wifi hotspot.

BUT........................

It is up to the CARRIER to allow or not allow these features.

Verizon is not going to give tethering and wifi hotspot away for free.

If it is included then it will cost.

Thats why i use Pdanet for tethering, no monthly charges and it even tethers over bluetooth.

i'm not sure if verizon will give tethering away either but the palm phones get free wifi and idk if you still can but you used to get free tethering with winmo phones....
