Must pay for hotspot just to access WiFi?

So this is taken from the fine print at the bottom of www.sprint.com/evo and I assume if it was a typo it would have been corrected by now:
The exact text says:
"Sprint Mobile Hotspot add-on required to access Wi-Fi on device."

Has anyone seen Sprint say that is wrong?

I read that too and scratched my head. I'm sure it's a typo, or at least not very good wording.

To access wifi (TO th EVO) you simply turn it on in settings...


let me say that a different way too.... To send wifi from EVO you must pay ( not really ths will be covered soon after release I imagine)

To receive wifi to the EVO , turn on in settings,

ya. my interpretation is: if someone wants to access YOUR 4G connections via wifi, you need to have the mobile hotspot subscription. if you don't, they can't access it.

there are a few apps to do this, BUT not sure if they will work right w/ 4g right off the bat, someone w/ more knowledge could tell us though (BSOD maybe).

That doesn't make any sense. I think you are confusing accessing a data connection, with accessing WiFi.

You need 2 way communication for WiFi to work at all, regardless of where the data connection is coming from.

Evo to WiFi router: I want to go to this website.
WiFi router to Evo: Here it is.

As far as the WiFi adapter is concerned, that is no different from:
Computer to Evo: I want to see this website.
Evo to computer: Here it is.

So the WiFi on the Evo communicates both ways no matter what type of connection you use.

ok to help you understand, the EVO can connect to your wifi network w/out the hotspot thing, BUT other computers cannot connect to your EVO to use its network connection for internet w/out the hotspot activated. thats what he means (but I pritty sure someone will make an app to make it work w/out paying soon)

When you put it like that, it's not even close to what Sprint actually put on the website. They flat out said in order to access WiFi, they didn't say "in order for another device to access the Evo's data connection."

It also says to get the mail-in rebate you have to purchase the phone by 6-5-10, that only gives people 2 days to buy the phone to be able to qualify for the rebate.


I think whoever they had come up with the wording needs to be fired.

I'm just hoping that they didn't really think the wording over properly, SaltyDawg, but you're making a very good point.

That'd actually be really disappointing, if WiFi is not an option at all, unless you pay for the 29.99 tethering fee. That's like taking a step backward from what is currently offered (e.g. being able to connect to a modem through a router, via WiFi).
