Android 2.2 FROYO For HTC Desire

Hi, Does anybody have information on the release of this update, When available, if it will be an OTA download or if it will be available from HTC`s website to download to PC.

This update will likely be announced on the 19th of this month at Google I/O. It will probably be an OTA, however I'm sure there will be limitations on which phones will be able to update and which will not since the OS itself will more than likely demand a lot from the hardware to function properly.

Hi, Thanks Mobil3Gen for you reply.My problem is I imported my Desire from UK and I live in Australia. The only operator here is Telstra (they have a 6mth monopoly on the sale of the Desire.) and they are rubbish as a telco.,So OTA is not an option for me.Do you think it will be available from Htc website?

Dude you sure about no OTA? cause I imported the HTC Desire from Hong Kong and i'm on Voda in AUS,

In the Settings you can make it do a search for new versions of software instead of waiting for it to be pushed.. and I can guarantee that HTC will put it on the site.. they have with all the other updates.. (fingers crossed)..

Sense UI is a 2mb app lol, can't be too hard to get it working on 2.2, all it does is weather animation!

About those limitations: Froyo is build so it can run on a very wide range of devices. From low end to high-end phones. Any additional features for the high end phones will be available as a download;
So what you say is not entirely correct.

Whether an official release for the htc desire will come quickly depends on HTC. They have to put their UI on top of Froyo and such an update can take several months (even longer if you are unlucky). However after the hero-update-fiasco I'm sure they'll take some measurements to ensure an update within a reasonable time-frame

That being said I'm sure you'll be able to install a froyo-rom for the desire (not official from htc) without sense earlier than htc sends out its version

Edit: for more information about this subject make sure you read the sticky first:

Sense actually does a lot more than that. It provides an interface for many different aspects of android. It's one of the reasons why android fragmentation has become such an issue as any OS updates have to be reintegrated into sense. Google have talked about how future updates will install more like apps than an OS update to get around this but it was unclear whether this will apply to Froyo. I think the phone campanies know that more fragmentation would be bad for them so they'll get an update out as soon as possible.

Bzzzzt. Wrong. Sense UI is a proprietary UI with its own framework-res.apk. What this means is: it modifies the browser, the lockscreen, provides functionality for the currently existing Flash lite, modifies Settings.apk, is depended upon by its own set of widgets/apps (Friendstream, Footprints, HTC music, etc).
