Help Apps are relaunching after ATK

I've had my Incredible since April 28th and one of the first apps I downloaded was Advanced Task Killer. I've reviewed the pros and cons of using a task killer, and I decided to use it and I have really appreciated it.

However, over the last week or so.... I've noticed whenever I do a manual "kill" of apps, it tells me there are anywhere from 25-40 apps that were killed. Apps that I have downloaded and have NOT launched, but are continuously showing back up in the background. This did NOT happen the first few weeks I had the phone.

Am I missing something? Do I need to post what apps? It's not any one or two particular apps, its 25-40 apps that I do not open but somehow make their way on the list for ATK to kill again.

Read up on the linux operating system and why it isn't a good idea to just sigterm applications, also read up on how threads/processes in the linux environment can "sleep" at 0% cpu utilization, as well as how linux operates on a 'dont waste ram' policy...

Next, use the search button to join the various other threads of people bickering on using a task killer vs not using a task killer... hopefully the research you did from what i said in the earlier paragraph will help you make a justified decision.

This isn't a blackberry! ... doing a battery pull on a running android device is as smart as yoinking the power cord out of a running pc.

Agreed. Go without for a week or two, see how the phone runs and then make the decision. I have never used a task killer on either of my android phones, and have NONE of the "Oh man, my ____ isn't ____ and my ATK is doing ____." My phones have been relatively flawless without a task killer.

My reasoning for posting this thread was not if I should be using ATK or not, but why so many apps are launching themselves in the background now as opposed to not doing it before. ATK is merely the tool that is pointing out the issue.

It isn't an "issue". This is a linux based operating system which means that some installed applications have services installed or cron jobs that launch the application for specific reasons. Even though the application is running it doesn't mean it is actually executing cpu cycles.

By the nature of android, these applications may run for a brief moment, but do not shut down immediately because android doesn't see a need to free up space, so it instead is caching the applciation in ram incase it needs to / you need to run it again

It does help. I guess my biggest reasoning was the difference between now and a few weeks ago, when I had the same apps installed but they were not showing back up after being killed.

Yea some apps could be running on a different cron, like maybe once a week or once every two weeks or something, so maybe at the time you checked it just wasn't running or android closed it up. I'd say as long as you dont see the cpu numbers jump up on those apps that you dont run you should be ok.

edit: if you do notice one of the apps is constantly hitting cpu cycles, let us know and im sure you will find a user that can explain what that app is doing or if its normal for that app to be hogging cpu power

Err i dont remember if ATK does it, but one of my favorite apps that ive been using is

SystemPanel App / Task Manager - Android app on AppBrain

Very lightweight, tells you the memory used by the process and the cpu time.

exactly, ditch the POS task killer and just get this app....it is fantastic and lets you kill things if you really need to. but it tells you is "inactive" and what is actually using cycles

I just wanted to thank you guys for recommending the system panel app. It helped me understand what was truly killing my battery. That being my live wallpaper. Using an AVG of 48% of my CPU! I've switched to a static wallpaper, and my battery life has been great!

I don't have the same problem, but a similar one! It sucks that if anyone posts anything about an Task Killer and their function they get flamed, but so be it. I have run the stock Android OS since I received the phone on the 28th and my battery life has been appalling. I've tried everything that has been noted about saving battery life (charge, turn off, charge more; Mobile Network Always On, GPS Off, BT Off, WiFi Off and this is on two different Incredibles and the stock battery and a Seidio 1750. My first DI has a dead pixel. With all of this being said, I love the phone and have decided that I don't want to turn the Mobile Network settings off because it affects the weather widget, Facebook, and Google Talk. I see all of these people going so much longer on a single charge than I can even come close to..... So, I ran a test, I restarted the phone and immediately went into Application>Running and noticed that upon startup and using nothing, I had 64 applications running. Now, I am not saying that these need to be stopped, but when I opened the task killer, there were probably 15 programs that I didn't start that showed up in the Programs running list; such as Pandora, Peep, City ID and others. Why is Pandora running if I didn't start it. I don't Twitter so why is Peep running, etc....? So, I am running ATK and noticed that I get better battery life. I haven't analyzed this yet, but feel battery life is directly attributed to the mix of applications people are running on their phone. I noticed all of this because before the Task Killer my Uptime and Awake Time were virtually identical, which meant that "some" program was causing my phone not to sleep. Now after installing the Task Killer they are not close, which means the phone is sleeping. I'm only on day two of the test and don't care enough to make it scientific, but it seems right now that ATK is killing some battery draining app, upon screen lock, but still don't know which one! Just my $0.02!

I agree .... I don't see any harm in killing tasks that you either haven't opened or don't need to use at the time like Pandora, FM Radio, Skype Mobile, Internet, etc.

i will guarantee that some of those apps arent 'running' they are 'cached' and are effecting the performance of the phone at all, not using the CPU. download the app listed above and it will tell you what they are

I just want to say that the day I got my Inc I installed ATK myself bc I thought it was a good idea, but when I was killing my "task" I noticed that most of the apps i would try to use would force close, so I took off ATK and I've only had 1 force close since.
