Will the EVO beat the iPhone?

Well it depends on what you mean by "beat". If you mean outsell the Iphone, I might agree with you. The Iphone is a "sexy" device in the sense that its cool to own one. If you walked around and asked random people what is the best cell phone out there right now my guess is most would say the Iphone. Now, technically the Iphone was beat long ago by the likes of the droid, nexus 1, incredible, desire, hero, etc. The top of the line android phones almost always have bigger screens, faster processors, and more options to customize your phone so that its "YOUR" phone.

So to sum this up, if you mean beat by outselling it and appealing to the masses, maybe not. If you mean beat it technically, then yes that was done a long time ago.

The EVO won't outsell the iPhone or take over iPhone's position in the market. There are way too many iPhone followers that are attached to the brand that it would take Apple going out of business to make them switch.

I also believe the target market for both of these phones are different.

The iPhone is geared toward trendy people who aren't very 'techy' yet want to look hip and 'in the know'. They are also the people that like things to just work...nothing to learn...just work.

An example of their users is my GF's aunt. I posted a news story about the EVOs release on my facebook and she responds "iPhone killer? Yea right. The iPhone 4 is coming out in August". So there you have it. A fanboy who won't even try to question if their device is inadequate.

Now the EVO is geared more toward the techy crowd with having Android. People that know he actual specs of their phone and are willing to learn about how it actually works.

But I'm fine with the EVO not getting as big as the iPhone. We all know what happens when something is gobbled up by the masses. It gets ruined.

So we'll all be sporting 'that phone' people comment about when they see it in person because it won't be just another iPhone. They'll be driving the same ol' boring 4 cylinder sedan while we are driving the Corvette of phones.

Exactly, the only way the EVO could beat the Iphone would be if it became the trendy phone to have. I dont think Android or HTC are at that level yet, I dont know if I even want them there.

What I want to see is people not to just settle with the EVO like people did with the iPhone. I want people to grasp and love the EVO/Android but a year from now demand more. iphone users didn't do that. They continued supporting the iPhone even though it was showing its age.

By demanding better devices/OSs we benefit by getting the most advanced devices these compnaies can develop

couldn't have said it better! ;)
the Evo is def for us tech heads.

i look at it this way...although the Evo is gaining lots of press popularity...

iPhone = mainstream
Evo 4G = underground

The Iphone will remain #1 period. Android as a whole might one day have as many users as the iphone, but to me the #'s are slightly skewed. Being that there is 1 iphone on 1 network, made by 1 company. The iphone is simple and easy to use and in the end thats what most people want. They dont want to have to go on forums to figure out how to get something to work. And the end all is the appstore. Its just plain better in just about every way. Android is catching up but android apps just arent the same quality(even for apps supported on both platforms).

Apple figured out what people want, thats something that just works and is simple. Everyone else is just playing catch up. Theres room for both to grow and do well.

Which is funny when you think about it....the iPhone has gone so mainstream that they've sold out and the Evo is what the cool kids will be rockin

yeah its the RAZR all over again lol

makes you wonder if the iphone popularity dive is inevitable.

but yeah, at least for awhile, iphone will remain to have all the hype. it's nice to share the happiness with those around you but in the end who cares what everyone thinks. i'll be plenty happy with my evo :)

The Iphone will sell more units, but this phone will change things. Android as a whole is changing the market. Everyone thought that nothing could outsell the Iphone considering how popular is it, but this week it came out that Android is selling 65000 units a day.

The EVO is going to push Android just like the Droid did last year. The phones that are moving Android forward are progressing much faster then the Iphone. Even if the Iphone comes out and has the same specs as the EVO (which we already know that it will not) then its still playing catch up, like usual.

It will be interesting to see what happens with Android over the next few years compared to the Iphone. So many phones Vs the one Iphone? How much of a dent can Android put into the Iphone?

I pretty much agree with this. Apple should be careful. They seem dangerously close to repeating the same mistakes they made with Microsoft, IBM, and IBM clones back in the day. I don't think it'll happen, but I wouldn't be shocked if Apple was not the same company 10 years from now that they are today.

The iPhone has brand recognition over the EVO, plain and simple. No phone will beat the iPhone without brand recognition across every demographic.

Quite honestly, this is the "scope" of how the general consumers view the cellphone landscape:

iPhone vs. Blackberry phone (regardless of which one) vs. Droid Phone (general consumers can't even identify Android).

There aren't multiple versions of the iPhone. There's only 1 (3 different generations and a 4th coming). Blackberry has multiple versions of phones and the same case for Android phones.

I just can't imagine people saying, "Do you have an iPhone, EVO, or something else?" What I can imagine people saying is, "Do you have an iPhone, Blackberry, Droid or something else?"

Ultimately, I just hope the phone does what I need it to do.

So so true! You hit the nail on the head!

It's dead simple to use

I left Sprint a few years back to get the iPhone 3g. I have to admit that the phone was pretty cool but after a year i couldnt take ATT's service anymore. I switched back to Sprint. The fact that I couldnt run multiple apps at the same time killed the iPhone for me. I have had the Hero for almost a year now and haven't missed the iPhone. I can't wait for the Evo. Number 1 on the preorder at my local best buy.
