Root Rooting the 2.1 OTA

Does any one have a very general time frame of how long it will take to root the OTA, if an exploit is found. I know there a lot to do it, but a rough idea, a week, a month...

And if the assumption that v3=OTA, there had been a post about a possible exploit in the v3 to allow root on it prior to getting the OTA. Any word on this or if the same possible point is in the OTA?

It all depends on when the devs can work on it. Since they're close with v3...it shouldn't be too long.

Actually, motoxcreature's boy-genius cousin has already rooted the phone weeks ago; but it's impossible to predict how much time it will take to document the method.

:)

Seriously now: the Eris has never been rooted. Not 1.5, not any of the 2.1 leaks. A no-security bootloader upgrade was leaked by someone who worked for HTC or VZW, and that's how rooted ROMs got loaded on to the phone. Surprisingly, though, knowing all that does not help to predict if or when it will happen. Could be tomorrow, could be never.

It's not like baking a loaf of bread, where you know exactly what steps are required, and about how much time is needed for each step. It's more like wiggling the doorknobs on random houses to see if they are unlocked... and only if you find an unlocked one with a poodle inside are you done.

Personally, I think an interesting query to pose over on XDA would be "Post a reply if you have personally attempted an application, bootloader, or kernel exploit against any HTC release (or leak) on an Eris in the last 7 days."

I think you will probably be able to count the replies on less than five fingers.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to see someone succeed at it... but I think that there is an impression that a lot of devs are working frantically to get root for the leakers, or even for downstream 2.1... and I am skeptical that that is the case.

Andrizoid, I think this is false information. If it was THAT easy, 3 or 4 days tops that is, to root, the leakers would have root by now.

No, his info is correct. The op hasn't stated that hes rooted or leaked. If he is looking for a rooted rom of the new ota that will take no time at all once its available to everyone. The v3 leak had a rooted rom based on it the same day it came out.

on leak 2.1v3.
wish I had rooted instead of just the leak.

There's a discussion in the normal Eris forum about the HBOOT being the same for 1.5 and 2.1OTA, possibly allowing root to still be done on it, but a different version for 2.1v3 so not possible with the current method.

if your on the leak, the ota is sadly going to do nothing to help. still gotta wait for an exploit to be found.

Lets make it clear

1) if you received the OTA, you can flash the root rom and still gain root. It does not over write teh 1.5 bootloader, so we are all good on that front. You can root now

2) if you talking about a root rom made from ota, look at my last leak rom. Thats the OTA root rom. It contains identical files to the OTA update. I released it within an hour of the leak. OTA update DOES NOT contain anything new (of value).

3) Time to root a device can go from 0second, to never.

Does anyone have the steps for rooting the 2.1 OTA rom? Would I pretty much just follow the instructions here (http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-eris/53963-guide-stock-1-5-latest-root-2-1-a.html) but just skip number III if I want to just stick with using the OTA 2.1?

This is a fairly new bit of info so I doubt you will get a definitive answer. It sounds like your best bet for rooting if you are on 2.1 ota is to follow the same steps in that thread. You will basically have what you have running now just with root permissions and will be able to flash to different roms if you dont like the stock ota.

guys, no need to update to the OTA if your using root. custom roms are based off the leaks. that means you will bascially be running an OS that is identical to the build of whichever leak your rom is based off of. updating to the OTA and then rooting and flashing a rom just adds a lok of extra steps without contributing anything.

according to jcase, the 2.1.3 leak is the same as the OTA in all ways. so that mens that any of you running roms based of 2.1.3-most roms use this already-are basically using the OTA as your OS.
