installing recovery image

sorry if this is the wrong forum for this.. however l believe my device has now been rooted.. however lm having issues installing the recovery image..

l plan to install the cyanogen mod or at least something with a good amount of features as this phone (Sony Xperia SP) is constantly crashing, so far lve managed to root the phone, turned usb debugging on lve also unlocked the bootloader, however when it comes to installing the recovery image be it the boot.img contained within cyanogen or twrp images l keep getting the following error: failed data transfer failure unknown error

lve followed every tutorial l can find but none seem to explain this issue happening and how to sort it.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you getting that error while using fastboot?

Can you copy/paste the text and/or post a screenshot of what you're seeing / doing?

I don't have any experience with Sony devices, so I don't know if fastboot is the flashing utility used...if it is, are you using a USB 2.0 or 3.0 port? I've had issues flashing large files via fastboot on USB 3.0, so if you have a 2.0 port on your PC, you might give that a try (and/or a different cable--couldn't hurt).

originally l did use fastboot..

l believe l dont have any usb 2.0s which maybe an issue, tried different cables.. tho it doesnt want to stay in fastboot, tho it will happily stay on the other mode via USB..

wish l had started off trying to download the update directly via the phone... seems it wont install rom manager doesnt support the Xperia SP... and other flash utils that dont require a USB (as l cant seem to stay connected long enough any more to use SDK tools) dont seem to want to do much..

cant even use the Xperia Companion software either because the phones modified...

l can however use the terminal emulator, tho reading flash_image may not be supported but something about dd might, tho lve also read elsewhere something about my model not having a recovery mode due to something about PC recovery software.. might have to give up on things tho l have no clue how lm going to get it to work properly again lol thats essentially all l wanted to achieve, and l think 2 nights gooogling is getting to be enough time spent on trying to sort things out.

Sony devices don't use the 'traditional' Android recovery partition, instead booting to recovery using the stock kernel/boot image. This means (essentially) that installing a custom recovery requires the kernel to be modified, or replaced.

A quick search found a topic at XDA regarding such a kernel that includes CWM. Flashing will require a working fastboot mode though.
