Hey guys and gals,

I'm extending my current phone plan which allows me to pick a new phone. I've decided to go with the HTC Desire.

Now I've added an internet plan to go with the whole deal, so I can have the web on my phone when I'm out. However, it won't activate until my new plan kicks into effect (which is a few months from now).

What steps should I take to insure my Desire won't go on the internet outside of using Wifi spots in the house or in places where available?

Two ways:

1: Go to Settings > Wireless & Networks > make sure there is no tick next to "Mobile network."

2: Long press your homescreen in an empty space > Go to "Widget" > tap "Settings" in the list > tap "Mobile Network" > this adds a toggle button to your homescreen so that you can turn mobile data on and off at will just by hitting the button.

Thanks, that seems the way to go.

Is it possible that the phone will override that setting?

If so, will it ask me before it does?

No, it won't. It will use wifi when it can and if you try to access the internet and it can't use wifi, it will pop-up a box asking you to check your settings. If you tap cancel on this, it stops the attempt, no worries.

There are numerous widgets you can use that will put a switch on your homescreen to turn mobile internet on and off.

I think there is a simple one built in but I use this one which lets you control most things SwitchPro Widget v1.2 Application for Android | Tools

Yup, that one is quite good, used it for ages until I found that one I posted above which is a clone but uses smaller icons to fit in 7.

The built in one does work slightly better as everything is only one click on/off. SwitchPro some of them take you to a menu. But I needed the extra options

Slight correction: the mobile internet button you're referring to is an auto-sync on/off button, so you can turn off the auto syncing of weather, news, facebook, etc, but your mobile internet will still work if you want to go on the web. Perfect

I stand corrected.

On one of my home screens i've actually got the toggle switches for wifi, airplane, mobile, bluetooth, gps, and sync. Down two columns on the left, with task killer and battery guage at the bottom, and then a contacts widget on the other half. Works quite well. All the connectivity options all in one place, next to all the people i connect with most often.

Thanks guys, that's some pretty handy information to have. My Desire should be arriving tuesday so I'll try out the suggestions and let you guys know how they worked out.

Another way without dedicating home screen space to widgets is to press and hold the power button. Will give you the option to turn wireless networks on and off, activate airplane mode, and switch on vibrate mode. ( Will also let you switch the handset off too)
