Help Mirror cast not working. LG g3

I have an LG g3 running Android 6.0. I am unable to mirror cast. When I try to play forinstance a movie from my phone to my smart TV it displays on the TV unable to play video. I'm assuming this is probably an issue with marshmallow and that the phone would have to be rooted to solve this issue, but wanted to check and see if there is anyway around this without rooting.

Install the Roku app from the Play Store to play Roku and streaming content to your TV:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.roku.remote&hl=en
AFAIK the VLC Android app has no capability to mirror content to a smart tv, the computer versions of VLC can though. The Google Home app can do it seamlessly to a Chromecast, but that's just another thing you'd have to buy to take up another HDMI port on your TV.
Try this Vizio SmartCast app, although depending on what you have it appears to be more for new TVs:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vizio.vue.launcher
Otherwise, maybe this AllConnect app might do what you need, looks to be compatible with a wider range of devices:

The roku app will come up on my TV but all I'm able to access to mirror to the TV is photos on my phone. I've tried the allconnect app and all it does is spin likes is trying to load and sink with the roku but doesn't connect. And with the vizio app I'm not able to find an option to cast with.

My daughter has a galaxy s5 and she has no issue casting from her phone to our roku. But I'm pretty sure she is running kit Kat. That's why I think it's a android version problem.
Which app is your daughter using that's casting correctly to your Roku?
I'm not sure I downloaded it off popcorn time.
Also, going back to your original query, is the issue you're having with casting from your LG to your TV tied to this particular mkv file or is this a long-standing problem you've had with different content?

No particular app. She is just such synching her phone to the roku. I think she is running kit Kat on her phone

So I'm assuming there is no way to get mine to cast to my TV for popcorn time?
Maybe have your daughter look at your phone to see if she can duplicate what she does to get her phone sync to your TV. Re-download that exact same video file (it still hasn't been determined if the copy you're currently using is corrupt or problematic) onto both phones, use the same app on both, same process on both to see if it works out on both or just hers.

Try going into your LG's Settings >> Application manager and find your Popcorn Time app. Click on the 'Force stop' button and then the 'Clear cache' button. Start up the Popcorn Time app and see if it can cast to your TV.
If it's still a problem, go back into the Application manager, find that PT app, and tap on the 'Force stop' button again but this time tap the 'Clear data' button. Start up the PT app and you'll need to enter your login info/password again. (The 'Clear data' button essentially wipes all the settings/configuration so when starting the app it'll be starting up 'clean', the same as when you originally installed it.)
