"System Update" Notification This Morning..

You made a great effort to hold out as long as you can...

I did. Thank you.

It finished a few minutes ago. I'm configuring.. everything seems fine so far.

It defaulted to its stock, boring screen, so I'm putting my stuff on it.. noticed all my photos and wallpapers are there..

One thing I took note of right away: I saw several reports of the device not going to sleep with the end button, mine goes to sleep with it and seems to function the same as before, only more quickly.

I'll continue putting it through its paces, messaging and making calls, etc...

Anyway.. in messaging I see there is a character-count meter in the upper right of the landscape mode screen. It is off the actual text field area in both landscape and portrait (in portrait on 1.5 it was a bit of an annoyance).

I'm also noticing that the first use of messaging, phone calling, menu tweaking, screen configuration, etc, is just a bit slower than subsequent uses; indeed, I thought I was spotting bugs for a bit there, but everything is settling in as I repeat usage of them, including transition from portrait to landscape while texting.

I'll try web browsing with it now using the stock browser.

Glad they fixed that, it is an annoyance. Especially since Swype's word prediction is always wonky with my text messages. I've sent a few funky texts because a mis-predicted word was hiding under that counter.

Yeah, I had very few complaints about the 1.5 stock operating system, but that message counter in portrait got on my nerves. :D

The browser is quick and has a slightly different menu, "navigate" where "bookmarks" was, but seems more intuitive.

I just watched a YouTube video.. no problems and quite "computer like" as I observed it loading and running nicely.

I'll be keeping an eye on battery life, as I was getting used to two days of not needing a charge, even though my acquired habit is to place the charger on the device each night around 9 or 10 pm.

So far so good on the 2.1 update, folks. ;)

It's there in the notification bar again.

It does appear I have no choice but to run it.

I was hoping it would merely be in the menu and could be ignored.

..running the download now.
Told ya.;) I do remember MR2 doing the same thing. I actually held out for about 2 days before I gave up. You were ready, congrats Frisco. Welcome aboard.

For the most part, it seems that those with no problems on 1.5, have the same experience on 2.1. I expect you to have all of the functionality as before with a few more bells and whistles to play around with.

+1 I fully agree. I was experiencing what I thought was much worse battery drainage on OTA 2.1 , but after a few days of use and a few days of letting the new shine wear off and not on it all day, everything seems to have settled down.

Yes, our "good 1.5 = good 2.1, bad 1.5 = bad 2.1" theory seems to bear out again.

I can find nothing wrong with it and am pleasantly surprised at the increased quickness and overall look and feel of the update.

Not worthy of a new thread, just an observation after about 10 hours of using the device off and on with the OTA installed.

- Battery life has suffered a bit as compared to the stock 1.5 OS. I'm thinking about 20% more drainage overall, as at this point in the day prior to upgrading I would have been seeing about 70% of the battery life remaining. As it is, in 2.1 usage, it now reports about 50%.

- Heat while charging! What a difference this is; I put it on the charger about 15 minutes ago and went back to it and handled it and found it to be not warm, but hot as compared to charging it in 1.5.

Not hand-burning hot, but good and noticeable, a bit disconcerting. I'm going to read up a bit on battery behaviors before I come to any conclusions about this little discovery.

Congrats, Frisco! I found my update notice this morning and had a serious moment of hesitation before I pressed that "Download" button. I, too, have been pleasantly surprised at how well everything seems to be working (guess that makes me sound sort of a pessimist, huh?) I was very happy with my 1.5 phone, and expect to be happy with this.

The battery seems to be expiring faster, but I attributed that to all the fiddling I was doing with the phone - setting things up and trying out "new" stuff. Definitely seems to be "hotter" while charging, as well.
