Vzw...

I'm not a Sprint customer so I may be wrong, but they were stuck with Palm phones for the longest time, and then had the Hero when VZW had the Droid. I do not see where Sprint>VZW. AT&T is a different story, however if I'm going to sacrifice my call quality/signal/anything-else-call/signal-related, then it essentially makes my phone worthless.

Are we talking about EVO 4G? (sounds like it without having to say it explicitly)
Just a wee-bit problem with "EVO 4G is better phone and Verizon users are getting screwed yet again!" approach:

1. Verizon won't roll out 4G network until much later (beta-testing in one or two market don't count)
2. By the time they do roll out 4G network, they will bring out bigger/better/badder/faster phone (and it's always one-upping-the-other game)
3. EVO 4G (or other "exclusive to other network" phone) has limited appeal if you don't want to change your network. With that being said, I have no need for iPhone because I don't like AT&T (and has no coverage here), and don't care for Apple product (that's purely my preference). EVO 4G has no appeal to me, because I wouldn't jump to Sprint just to get that, and HTC really cannot bring EVO 4G to any other network at the moment (or for awhile).

What available phone is better than the Inc at the present? :p

I can make and receive phone calls on any Verizon phone. Therefore any Verizon phone is automatically better than any Sprint phone.

Opinions ROCK!

I humbly say

X 2

I would also add;

There is a LOT MORE to cell phone use than just the handset... Verizon is not #1 in network coverage and customer satisfaction for no reason... from a long time customer, IMHO, they earned it.

Now Sprint on the other hand.... again, IM(not so)HO is

I agree with above posters.

What phone on Sprint is better than the DI?

Answer: None. No, not even the Evo.

Evo has a bigger screen, yes, but it is using a normal TFT which isn't as bright or clear or colour rich as the AMOLED on the DI.

Also, that extra screen size makes it, in my opinion, unpocketable. The EVO is the same size as the HD2 and i've used the HD2 and its just too big.

Wimax is not true 4g. its 3.5g and nowhere has coverage. 20 locations in the whole country isn't coverage. Also WIMAX is a huge battery drain.

The one advantage the Evo has is the camera(s)

720p video recording and the front facing camera is nice.

However, the HTC Desire has 720p recording slated as an OTA update, so i can't imagine that the DI wouldn't get the same with its superior camera(8 vs 5mp)

Also, last but not least, the areas I live, work and travel to have 100% rock-solid Verizon coverage. I can't say the same of AT&T, T-mobile or Sprint.

Verizon now has a VERY solid stable of phones for all walks of life.

I am not attacking the DI, I am just saying that VZW has a history of making us pay for otherwise should-be free features. I love my DI, there is obviously nothing better on the market, or anything for that matter that would be worth it because of service, reps etc... I just was saying... I wish VZW would give us what we pay for in regards to the hardware of the phones I get from them.

why do VZW customers consistently need to unlock features

I am just getting sick of having to unlock certain features on my awesome VZW phones. Only to see a similar phone on Sprint with said features unlocked

VZW has a history of making us pay for otherwise should-be free features [. . . ] I wish VZW would give us what we pay for in regards to the hardware of the phones I get from them

You have yet to explain yourself. What features do you want that are locked?

AMOLED vs TFT - the colors on AMOLED are amazing, but it's a PITA to try using your phone in bright sunlight. Each has their advantages, and drawbacks.

That is your opinion, and while it LOOKS big, (and it is, don't get me wrong) it is no bigger than the moto q or iphone, which people pocket everyday. Also, a family member does have the HD2, (and it's amazingly fast!) and is pocketable, for me.

Semantics. Wimax IS 4G. by end of year it will cover over 51 major markets. How many markets does everyone else have? zero. VZW's rollout won't be any different, just a year and a half behind, if not more. Also, how, exactly would WiMAX be more of a battery drain than 3G? Actually from what I've read, it uses less power than 1xEVDO.

However, the HTC Desire has 720p recording slated as an OTA update, so i can't imagine that the DI wouldn't get the same with its superior camera(8 vs 5mp)

HTC EVO4G also has an 8 MP camera, not 5MP.

I'm not going to quote IOWA for sheer length. But I noticed in the EVO4G specs, it says WiMax gets peak upload speeds of up to 1 Mb. This is apparently slower than EVDO which can go up to almost 2 Mb. I know upload isn't nearly as important, especially in a cell phone, but it strikes me as odd as to why you can have significantly more download bandwidth, but less upload than an older standard. Could someone explain this?

I've never gotten that high for upload on EVDO, and keep in mind EVDO has been improved several times already. It could also be a device limitation due to power/processing constraints.

I've gotten that on EVDO, but it doesn't happen often. I also have been dropping to 1X frequently (luckily for VZW it has been less frequently lately.) When it is performing at its peak, it is great to the point that when it drops down to 1X it reminds me of my EnV Touch.
I liked my old LG (to the point of considering picking up the Ally) but the speed of 1X EVDO made me avoid browsing the web unless I had to. I hate going back to that on my Droid.

Yeah dropping to 1x can be annoying.

I guess out here in the sticks, we have really good 3G coverage, because its really rare I ever see 1X.

I don't think it's coverage, as maybe more of a system glitch occuring from time to time. Maybe you guys never noticed, but when you use the phone or send a text message, it drops to 1x. I think sometimes it takes a little bit for it to connect back to EVDO for various reasons.
