Eclair 2.0 confirmed for the htc hero

You have to notice the part where it says it's up to Sprint to make push

Yea, but why would Sprint not make the push?

They are dying for business, and good reputation management.

Case in point - I walked into Sprint store last week. Helpful lady said if I buy new phone and continue my contract (which I'm planning to do) she will throw in a monthly discount and an accessory or two.

Sprint knows what they have to do - and updating their phones is part of that I'm sure.

Just my 2 cents.

Sprint has already given freebies and discounts. Heck look at their Sero they went overboard on that allowing so many people to get it. The problem that Sprint has had is costumer service and innovating when it comes to their phones. I have never had an issue with cs with their reps, but their phone selection in the past has been horrid. Now when it comes to rolling out updates, Sprint has sucked in the past! With Apple in the game now providing consistent updates even to their old devices it's a whole new game. Sprint cannot afford to not follow that model, it is now the STANDARD.

I have never owned an Iphone (AT&T Sucks) but I thank Apple for the innovation and high standard they have brought to the entire industry!!! Hopefully Google, HTC & Sprint can match and surpass that.

I agree Flash!!! Just picked up my Hero at Sprint two days ago. It is great. There are bugs that need to be fixed for sure but 2.0 should contain some major upsides. And I got the red-carpet treatment too --- they know what's up and they want to stay in business in a good way.

:D :) :D

The only thing that worries me is that it also says it is up to Sprint to help roll it out...hmmmmmmm?
They did say HELP coordinate the roll out. Not "solely" up to Sprint. Meaning that in the event that Sprint opts not to do OTA, that it should still be availble for downloading and manually installing either at home, or in a Sprint store.

I've been reading through the SDK notes to sort that out. Here is my personal read.

There are a bunch of features dealing with integrating additional bits into the contact list. HTC already did much of that with Sense, but that's an HTC special right now. Base android catches up a bit in 2.0 to the experience we've already got. I suspect access to these APIs will make sense's contact list even better.

Bluetooth got quite a number of new APIs. There is some interesting stuff in there for bluetooth proximity sensors, which should make for some interesting social apps.

The browser got a major update in 2.0, which should give a nice speedup.

The other thing that seemed interesting is if I'm reading it correctly there is now an actual Android API for multitouch events ("MotionEvent can now report simultaneous-touch information for devices that support it. Up to three pointers can be tracked simultaneously.") We know the Hero can do multitouch, as they put pinch and zoom into a number of apps, there by making this a nice win for Hero owners. Up until this point there wasn't a way for app writers to do multitouch, even if the hardware supported it.

A lot of the APIs are hardware support that doesn't do us any good. New camera things, the dock, etc. Not every part of any android upgrade will be applicable to older phones. :)

Overall, really looking forward to the upgrade. I already have such a device crush on my Hero, and think this will make it even better. :)

This shouldn't be much a surprise folks, with how popular the Hero's been selling it would be foolish of them not to update it. Not to mention all the direct feedback they are getting on cdma Android/HTC Sense, so it's only gonna get better ^.^ so when you think about it I guess it's better we got 1.5 stock in the end. Link for sr1982 and others not sure what's new in 2.0

i think the whole sprint comment is basiclly approval!! espeacialy since sprint had its own apps on the phone ie: sprint tv / nascar / nfl. they need to approve all changes will work with that. they also have to determine how it will be delivered....ie: ota / usb / postal mail / rikshaw!

all in all....good news, i think android is going to be the latest / greatest for wahile to come!!!! suk it IPHONE

My understanding of Android is that 2.0 will not slow down the Hero because 2.0 is just 1.5 and 1.6 and even 1.0 and .07 with better coding and bugs worked out. The apps you add and how many of those you have running at once will slow things down but not Android. Besides we already have much of 2.0 with what HTC brought to the table with this phone. Android is far superior if for no other reason than because it is open source for open source's sake. How many phones with other OS' were hacked and fixed by people like us? Now we all have an OS where that is more than encouraged. I hope all the WM tweakers like me come over to this side. Believe me Android will be like hot sex on christmas eve.

Does anyone fear 2.0 slowing down the Hero, or do you think it'll be a performance improvement?

2.0 will make all your apps/games run faster, it comes with a reworked hardware accelerator so everything should be streamlined and snappy when it's all said and done(2.0 optimized for the Hero, apps updated, etc.) Needless to say 2.0 + Hero will be buttery :).

I sent them a message from their web site about updating to 1.6 or 2.0. Here is what they said.

"I understand how important it is for you to have the latest software available for your device. If your device is branded to a carrier we work with them to determine which of their branded HTC devices will receive software updates. If your carrier does not request an update for the device we cannot create or host it. However if your carrier requests a software update we will host it on www.htc.com/us or your carrier
