Help messaging is unreliable

Ok, I'm really getting fed up with the messaging capabilities of this device. I use the gmail app because I want "push" email, although it's not even close to push email as far as I can see. I frequently get emails several minutes after they are sent. That's not new. They never arrive if I have WiFI enabled, but that's a different issue. I'm on 3G right now and I just checked my gmail account over the web on my laptop and I saw a new email in my inbox that arrived over 30 minutes ago. I looked at my phone and I had no notification of new email. I did a manual refresh and then it popped in. A couple minutes later, I got 5 emails at once in one of my other gmail accounts and all were sent nearly 45 minutes ago. This is not even close to "push" email. Before anyone asks, yes all my accounts are set to automatically sync and in case it was missed, I'm using the gmail app. I'm really questioning the reliability of this device. I'm considering taking the phone back and going back to my old Blackberry Curve 8330. It's much slower and the browser is worthless, but at least I never have to worry about missing emails, and they arrive instantly....not 45 minutes later (or never). Surely I'm not the only person out there this is happening to?

Do you have "Enable Always On" under your mobile data settings? Settings>Wireless and Networks>Mobile Networks?

With both the Eris and now the Inc nothing imo can match BBerry's email (which is what I came from) but I don't need to get emails like this. Heck I don't even need to get them but once a day no matter what time they come. However, from what I have gathered in this forum you should get true push with gmail in the form of seconds. ymmv

Sounds like your phone is sleeping maybe? Did you try your advanced wireless settings as well and set to "never sleep"?

Yes, it's set to always on in mobile data settings. What exactly do you mean by the phone sleeping? Doesn't it "sleep" after the timeout value when the screen goes black and locks? Is that not sleeping, or am I confused? Where is this "never sleep" option?

I think as a last option, you should try a factory reset and test gmail app with no settings changed or other apps install. If gmail works, then it probably means you have an app or setting that is causing conflict on your phone currently. It's a PITA, but it's worth a try before giving up and going back to your blackberry

Quick question, does a factory reset return it to stock settings? (no gmail or facebook accounts set up and all apps gone)

The never sleep option is for your wifi and it's under an "advanced menu" when you hit MENU button when already in the wireless settings menu. You said they never arrive when on WIFI so I thought you could change that setting to "never" so WIFI won't sleep.

agreed, messaging is one thing a BB kills the competition in still

as for this issue, i have seen some other with this problem but i have never had it and my settings are 'always on data' and wifi to always on with no sleeping there

Interesting, but when I use the stock "mail" app that houses my .mac and .gmail accounts, I always get the .mac email within about 10 seconds. This is whether I have wifi on or off.
BUT....I get my gmails faster with the native GMAIL app than I get the mac emails with the stock mail app (you can't put mac emails on the gmail app), regardless of wifi setting.
Thus, my conclusion is that the GMAIL app truly pushes email, and very quickly and consistently.

Are you using the Android Gmail app or the HTC mail app?

Android Gmail app is PUSH. Sometimes i get email on my phone before i do on my PC. Its instantaneous. I just bought some stuff on Amazon and about 3 seconds after I clicked, my phone buzzed to tell me that I had the confirmation email.

HTC mail app is not. 15 min - 1 day sync times.

I'm using the gmail app, as was stated in the second sentence. Unfortunately, it has not been instantaneous for me as of yet.

I also have no trouble with the phone and Gmail. I get a notification of a new email one or two seconds before it pops up in my inbox on my laptop. Very fast!

It's strange how some people have certain problems and some don't

Yes, it is strange. Some people have several problems with the device, but my only real problem has been with receiving email via the gmail app. The other problem is not receiving emails in the gmail app while wireless is turned on. I haven't tried connecting it to my wireless network and testing it that way since I did the factory reset, so maybe I'll try it again later tonight if I get some time.

For the last week or so there has been intermittent problems for my wife's incredible with Google Voice. If she manually checks it works, but sometimes she doesn't get her GV SMS for an hour (or 8 once). It seems to come and go. I've noticed on my incredible gmail does this on occasion.

I'm not sure if it's a google problem or a phone. But it isn't consistent. Most of the time I get gmail and GV updates faster than with Chrome extension active (and my gmail extension polls every 15 seconds).

You can also set up your gmail app to work through the HTC mail app as an exchange account which makes it push. Just use m.google.com as the server address. Can be finicky though.
