Will our update be missing promised upgrades?

Droid Eris Android 2.1 update -- the good, the bad, and the ugly | Android Central

Over at android central they broke down the eris 2.1 update and they were missing some promised advantages....

1- No voice-to-text include for text messaging
2- No pinch to zoom in google maps
3- no friendstream
4- no 3d gallery

those are just a few big ones not included in the eris update. can we expect the same with ours? im assuming yes since the eris and hero are basically the same phone. this is, of course, unless verizon messed up the update but i doubt it. If these arent included thats gonna suck because i was looking forward to these

I have a feeling we won't get anymore than the eris got. I have tried the new leak and although it is quick, it is missing some key things you mentioned above. google maps does have multitouch though. This does make sense because llike I have been saying in other posts. Sprint and htc is not going to include all the goodies because then you won't buy the evo. This is business but it kinda sucks. I am going to stick with my custom roms because all those other things are included and working flawlessly. Damageless is going to drop a new one based one the leak in a couple of days.

what exactly was promised and not promised? One is to assume all the sense goodies would be there. The legend and evo have the exact things we should. Don't forget the incredible too. Its obvious these things were left out for a reason. People are going to say, why would they do that...well it's because the evo is the next biggest thing and sprint is not stupid and they know if they load the hero up that some people won't see a reason to upgrade. Same with verizon dropping the incredible.

The things taken out could have easily been left in. I don't work for htc and I don't program phones but come on...friendstream, multitouch on g maps, no text to speech. This is silly. We haven't seen the official build yet but if I had to bet, it will be identical to the eris.

Well, with the leaked RUU, I got voice-to-text to work with a third party keyboard. Love it!

Pinch to zoom on Google Maps [actually pinch to zoom out] works fine.

Friendstream? No idea what that is.

Someone else explained #4.

So, two outta 4 aint bad, right? :)

1. Download Handcent or the XDA keyboard for speech to text
2. I am pinching and zooming on my map right now....
3. who cares?
4. You can download this if you REALLY need it...

While playing around with my Hero (updated with the "Leaked Sprint HTC Hero 2.1"), I just realized, I do infact have "Speach to text". All you have to do is open the menu key and there is the "Speach" mic.

I've been playing with it for awhile, and it works fine. I am currently using "Better Keyboard".

Glad that's working out for you. I updated the leak last night, and today I installed the XDA keyboard (HTC_IME mod), but the leak ROM doesn't seem to want to play ball with it. It will let me "switch" to the HTC_IME mod, but then the keyboard won't show up at all.

Yes, you can get to the "Speak" key when you press Menu in Handcent, but I'm afraid I haven't gotten it to show up anywhere else as yet. Pretty frustrating.

I also tried to install the htc ime mod and had no luck. I can't get the new gallery3d to load. I tried to load the apk's and also tried it through adb.

I heard there's a plethora of issues with a lot of the root options, only thing holding my temptations is the dread of losing functionality in exchange of a few nick-knacks.

you heard wrong... been running 2.1 for over a month now.. the latest 2.1 ROMS (Fresh 2.1.1 and DamageControl is releasing a new one shortly) all work great. Plus you can get rid of a lot of Sprint bloatware (or not.. your choice).. I know that on Fresh 2.0d I have text to speech, I have pinch to zoom (in more than just maps) 3d gallery can be used if you switch to the vanilla launcher (or Nexis launcher) instead of using SenseUI.. DamageControl 2.0.8 includes Friendstream

step over to the dark side... rooooooooooooot

Give me a break if you think this is true. Look, I know almost everyone in here is a tech geek (or we wouldn't be here), but the truth is most people who spend $190 on the Hero aren't going to get a new phone for at least two years when their contract is up for renewal. Even then, they may actually keep the Hero if it's still in good shape and working fine.

Don't forget people, we're in a recession and most people can't afford to get a new phone every 6-12 months....or they are not willing to.

I fall in the former category...I'm a tech geek who would love to get the Evo, but I'm unemployed so do you really think I'm going to drop $200 on a new phone...or do I use that money for say, food?

Here's to the 2.1 official upgrade...whenever it happens. :)

Is there not a forum called "All things root?" Why when anyone has a question about a non rooted phone, we are bombed with countless emails telling us to root? Maybe we would just like an answer to our question, and not countless "root" posts...my two cents worth..

And the reason people answer that they should root is because rooting is the most common way to solve any issues and improve the performance of your phone.

In this case, all 4 features that the OP is missing with the 2.1 upgrade are very easy to include in a custom ROM (which requires root).

I believe friendstream and speech to text can be added without root. Friendstream being an app that could be downloaded from the internet and installed, and speech to text can be installed by installing a third party keyboard (actually, come to think of it, installing a third party keyboard might require root...not sure).

See there? You were able to answer his question without the generic "root the phone" answer.

Thats because the new devices running 2.1 also have the updated version of Sense. The Hero and Moment will NOT be getting it. You will have to buy the Evo if you want your friend stream and 3D gallery..
