EVO Launching 1 Month Early Story Inside

Sprint rep told me the original launch date for the EVO was July 9th. It was moved up by HTC and Sprint so Apple and AT&T could not take bragging rights of having the first 4G smart phone to market when they introduce the IPhone 4G in mid June. The leaked photos on Gizmodo of the IPhone last month sparked the early release. This would explain why all of Sprints pre launch stuff says release Summer 2010.

Word. Though, if this is true what you heard, you likely misinterpreted it. I would not at all be surprised to find out that Sprint pushed up the launch. The Apple iPhone event, I believe, is in June. So it would make sense for them not to want to lose any of their hype to Apple when they announce their new phone.

Even if your story is true, the iPhone is NOT a 4G device.

Unless you mean Apple would release the iPhone as a "4G" device simply to confuse customers and entice them into buying it, which would not be out of the question considering it is Apple.

If they did that Sprint would kill them in the media.

You think the Verizon 3G commercials are hurting AT&T, imagine what the Sprint 4G commercials would do. Heck, Sprint could start making 3G and 4G commercials, showing download speeds and simultaneous voice and data, and coverage area.

Of course, Sprint's marketing department could sit on their hands too, and just let Apple and AT&T win another round. You never know with Sprint.

When the next iPhone comes out it will be the fourth iteration of the device.

The first iPhone that came out ran on EDGE which is sometimes called a 2.5G network. So, the first generation iPhone ran on a 2.5 generation network.

The second and third iPhone ran on a 3G network (3rd generation), hence the names 3G and 3GS.

The fourth iPhone is also likely to run on a 3G network. As a note, we still don't know what they're actually going to be calling this device.

Hspa+, best case, is about equal to wimax, worst case. The new iphone will release with hspa+ offer real world downloads of 1.2-2.3 mbps. Sprint did not release the evo sooner, it was always june release.

Bottom line is that marketing will win, and att and apple have the best marketing in the world. That does not change the facts on the ground.

T-Mobile's HSPA+ is actually pretty fast, but AT&T's won't be as fast as T-Mobile's. AT&T is only getting a 14 meg theoretical max. So I would guess Sprint's Wimax will totally eat it up in speed tests.

All the same coverage stuff Verizon is killing AT&T with would be in Sprint ads. And Sprint could also throw in the simultaneous voice and data, and download speeds. AT&T would literally have nothing to retaliate with. With verizon AT&T at least has the simultaneous voice and data and download speeds. But if Sprint went at them they would have no decent answer to it.

The iPhone 3Gs with good coverage is just about or very close in speed to anything on the market today. However its running on a 3G network, with software and internals that are about a year old. And the new one will be running on the same old 3G network when it drops in July. But the internals will be bumped up in a big way. Verizon has no real world LTE service, especially none available to the general public. While they may be doing trials with select individuals, they are at least a year away from having LTE available to an entire market.

Only problem is that at&t signed a big 5 year deal with Apple back in 2007. if that holds true....no iPhone on vzw till 2012...

more like HSPA+ vs. Sprint's 3G with some spin on the limited availability.

I don't think they'll call it 4G, brand confusion would go both ways.

HSPA+, best case, is a LOT LOT faster than Wimax. Worst case is a lot slower than Wimax.

HSPA+ with the iPhone = Suckage. Since that tech is affected by simultaneous users and AT&T 3G network can barely handle what they have already, I would say on average, AT&T users wouldn't see ANY improvement over 3G.

Verizon has said all along that they will have LTE rolling out late this year. This demonstration in Boston was just their way of telling everyone that everything is going well. See Verizon's website here, they say it will be launched in 30 markets in 2010:

The same guys reporting that Apple's contract was for 5 years are also reporting that Apple can get out of that contract if they want, and may have already got out of that contract. See here:

AT&T has the largest GSM network in the USA. Before they had the iPhone, they were the largest carrier. Verizon has since bought Alltel and passed them. But make no mistake about it, it's not the iPhone keeping AT&T afloat. I had AT&T and never had an iPhone (but only used smartphones). And it wasn't a problem with the service that made me leave, it was the practices of the company.
