Has rooting changed your mind about getting the EVO?

Ever since I rooted my phone to Fresh 2.0D and learned how to do the Live Wallpapers hack as well, I have enjoyed my phone so much that I am changing my mind about getting the EVO. I am one of those geeks that has to have all the newest toys but since I've rooted and installed a custom rom I find myself comparing my phone to the EVO and slowly realizing that my phone can be just as good. It really was the tethering thing that changed my mind. I think I will get the EVO once someone has learned to root it and do amazing things with it but until then, I am keeping the Hero. I truly love this phone.:D

Glad you love the Hero...however, if you are "one of those geeks that has to have the newest toys" ...plan on getting the EVO soon, as I imagine it won't take the DEVs long, after it is released, to figure out how to root it.:D

Like you, I won't even consider an EVO unless it can be rooted. That is why I went with an Android phone to begin with. Also, Sprint has some catching up to do in my opinion. How they are gaming the Hero owners to bolster attention to the EVO is shoddy marketing. The EVO, or maybe something else, is a wait-and-see for me. The rollout of the 4G service and available plan costs will be another factor. Lots of factors in play that make me just fill up the popcorn bowl, sit back for a while, and see how it plays out.

In answer to the OP: No .... BUT

I'm not getting the EVO because of its size. I was able to hold it and use it for a minute yesterday, and I am so glad I didn't pre-order. The EVO is WAY too big for my purposes. I will just wait for another year or so when they come out with a phone that is the size of the Sprint Hero.

Also, after hearing how Froyo (2.2) is speeding up things (450% faster), I know that I won't have to upgrade my Hero for a while because, unlike Windoze OS's, it seems like Android OS's are becoming less and less resource intensive. Yes, I know we don't even have 2.1 yet, but the devs will probably get a version of Froyo ported over to the Hero in the near future considering they have had 2.1 for a while now.

I think it will all depend on what FROYO is supposed to implement. There are rumors of flash implementation which our Hero cannot support full Flash 10.1 - perhaps we'll get a dumbed down version of it or maybe we won't get it at all. Either way, I'm satisfied with my rooted Hero running 2.1 right now with no issues whatsoever.

I will probably pass on the Evo for right now. The hero does pretty much everything I want it to so there is no reason for me to be an early adopter. When I first heard of the Evo I really couldn't wait to get one, but as more time goes by the less I want one right now. The nail in the coffin was Sprint charging mandatory $10 a month more when I doubt I will have 4g anywhere near me. In fact the idea of paying even more just to use an Evo makes me consider $25 a month for Virgin Mobile even more. I am pretty sure I will switch to that next month and cancel Sprint. I'm sure the Hero will make a wonderful PMP, much better than the ipod touch.

Edit:
By the way, JIT is available on the Hero now, if you are rooted. JIT is what gives froyo the major boost in performance and it can be turned on when not using Sense. It doesn't work well with Sense or the HTC apps and widgets that use Sense.

I was thinking about doing a poll today regarding the delays of 2.1 and who is turned off by the Evo due to it. I think there is a good amount of people in the forums that are left with a bad taste. I am clueless on what I will decide. I don't personally want the evo but I want the speed and the access to 3d games that are coming out. I have a pre and hero and could easily sell both and buy the evo full retail but I really want to see how htc will handle froyo b4 I drop that kind of money.

the hero with 2.1 rooted is virtually the same exact software. The hardware is what's gonna kill the hero. I personally think the evo is way too big and some people will realize that once they see it in person. Videos of it can be deceiving. The hero is the perfect size for me.

I am not a tech either when it comes to the android. This is what I used and I have done it many times without any issues. If your using windows on your pc, this will work. Follow it step by step and don't skip anything.

That's great, thanks. Just what I needed. Much appreciated.

And no, my lawyers will not come after you if anything goes wrong. (only if it goes TERRIBLY wrong...:D)

One more question: I was plenty of Rom versions out there. How do you tell the difference? For the Hebrew, I understand that they all would work, so I'm just wondering about different experiences with different ROM's.

I will get the EVO but I'll wait until I'm can upgrade. I can't see paying full price for it right now. But the added processing power and bigger screen are enough to make the change for me. I'm sure the devs will port Froyo to the Hero as well but I'm sure some of it will be lost to Hero users because we just won't have the power needed. I'm very happy running Fresh Rom 2.1.1 from flipz. It's much faster than in the past and will keep me satisfied until I can upgrade.

Although I do like 2.1 on my Hero, its gone that day the Evo is released. Advantages of the Evo are way too big

4.3 inch screen vs 3.2 is a huge difference
Higher resolution display
1ghz processor and 1GB of RAM
8MP camera
4G
WIFI hotspot

Those are pretty major upgrades over the Hero.

I believe the specs listed 1 GB of ROM and 512 MB of RAM.
