I am using WiFi tether on my myTouch 3g. Randomly my computer will just disconnect from the WiFi even with 99% signal strength. It doesn't do this with any other WiFi connections just the one from my phone. About the phone, its the original myTouch 3g, running Cyanogen 5.0.7-DS-test5. I tried to do some searching online about this problem but couldn't find any thing for recent versions of WiFi Tether.

Thanks in advance.

Do you have bad signal in your home?

If your loosing your 3G signal from your carrier, that might be cutting the wifi signal.

the 3g coverage *should* have nothing to do with wifi disconnections.

I dont have 3g where i am at. Where the phone sits it has 2 bars to full bars of EDGE. Never seems to fully drop signal where it sits when tethering.

You CANNOT wifi tether without 3G signal. If you don't believe me, turn off mobile network and try to turn on your wifi tether

MAybe we're not undersatnding each other.
Without 3G service you cannot do wifi tether...right?

I only remember this happening once... but my computer disconnected from my wifi tether, and when I checked my phone the tether was also off.
I assumed it was because of signal loss.

I am not positive. But i think that if you loose 3G service, even if it's just for a moment, the wifi tether will turn off.

I believe this could be the OP's problem.
But i could be wrong:D

Well i am posting these messages useing wifi tether with out a 3g signal, I can confirm 100% that wifi tether works on GPRS and EDGE. When my computer disconnects from the wifi, wifi tether is still on and working. The phone is able to browse internet still. Just cant figure out why the wifi signal drops randomly.

Ahhhh....
Sorry. This isn't the Eris forum. Sorry... I spend most of my time over there and assume every has an eris...lol

Ok... with the eris, you cannot tether without 3G.
Who's your carrier?
I know with other carriers you can turn off 3G and still receive MMS messages... but not with Verizon.
Probably the same deal with tethering.
Sorry for speaking like it was fact :D....

i am with t-mobile. I have 3g turned off to save on battery cause where i am staying right now they just barely upgraded to EDGE towers. Might only have to deal with this for a couple more weeks, probably going to switch to EVO on the 4th. :D With T-mobile you can txt, sms, email and pretty much do anything with the phone on GPRS, EDGE, and 3G. Of course its just going to be slow on GPRS.

You can tether without 3g on anyphone that can tether. It'll be slow as hell but it still works. So does mms...

Nope.
When i click to start tethering i get this:

"No mobile-data-connection established!"

Turn on 3G and it comes right on.

Also wrong on MMS. Can't MMS without 3G on Verizon.

Either there's something wrong with your phone, vzw did something to lock it down(like they always do), or your doing something wrong. Sprint uses the same technology as vzw, and I can tether on 1x.

No, i had looked into this before. There is an app that I wanted to use that turns off 3g (for saving battery) but allows MMS messages... can't remember the name...
anyway, i couldn't figure out why it wasn't working. Until my buddies at the Eris forums informed me this can't be done on verizon. I can't find the thread... but i believe it had something to do with their CDMA technology... or something like that.
So anytime my 3G is off, i will get a notification that I received a MMS message, but have to turn on 3G to download it. And wifi tether... forget about it....
And no... I'm sure it's not my phone :D.

I know how cdma works. (In fact better than 99% of the people on this forum). I also know you can tether without 3g with cdma. People have been tethering before 3g even existed. Including me. On a phone that didn't even have a 3g radio.

ok..lol...
This really shouldn't be an argument. I'm telling you it doesn't work and any other Verizon memer with a rooted phone will tell you this (since they informed me).

I know you are right about tethering without 3G...
But the OP was talking about Wifi tether... which on Verizon can only be done by rooting.
I dont know if there is a difference in wifi tether over 3G than the old fashioned way of tethering...
But our wifi tether doesn't work without 3G

Ofcourse, the OP is with T-mobile and that might be a whole different ball game...
that's why I posted message #9...
