New HTC Desire user.. battery woes :(

Hey guys

I got a HTC Desire last weekend. It was a T-Mobile version. Rooted it with this walkthrough. So i believe i am now on a generic firmware that has the HTC Quietly Brilliant logo at bootup.

My battery woes with this phone have been nothing but appalling. The battery simply keeps draining no matter whether i use it or not.
I have read this and other forums and am not using an task killers... also here are the settings i have kept

I have so far kept the brightness to 10% auto-bright = off

gps, wifi, bluetooth disabled

Mobile network = ON
Always On Data = ON

network = gsm obviously

location = Off

Am running a widget called Battery Widget that shows the batterymeter in percentage

Email is setup in the mail app for gmail and yahoo... set to fetch mail for 30 minutes in the morning everyday

Friendstream = Off

Auto-Sync = Off

On the homescreens itself, i have the widget app called Battery Widget and Quick Settings.

Have also disabled the calendar and other home screen widgets fearing the battery crisis.

The problem is the battery drains rapidly at the rate of 10% an hour even if i dont use the device. What is it that i am doing wrong? Am thinking of doing a factory-reset all over again?

Please help :(

First thing to check is to see if it is going into a sleep state or if you have any app that is keeping it awake. Menu -> Settings -> About Phone -> Battery. The "Up Time" should be a lot less than the "Awake Time".

If they are the same or very close then you have something keeping the phone awake (for me it was eBuddy IM). To find what that app is, install "Spare Parts" from the Market. Open it and select "Battery History" and in the top drop down menu, select "Partial wake use" and this will report what has been keeping the phone awake.

That *may* help you if it's an app that causing it.

just go into dialer and type *#*#4636#*#* go into battery history and check other usage and you will see what is using the phone or keeping your phone from sleeping when not in use. or check other parameters in drop down menu and come back here and give us results so we can see what is draining your battery.

It's all about the apps you use. I can get 60 hours of very light usage with WiFi always on, 3G and GPS off. But I can also drain the battery completely in less than 3 hours if use navigation over 3G and obviously GPS and display permanently on.

:eek:60 hours:eek:!! How light is that use?

I regularly get 12 hours but quite happy with that as I charge overnight. I would say that is with medium use, Mobile internet always on and Friend Stream updating, Exchange Active Sync and Gmail sync and News Room app running.

60 hours??? When you say light, how light are we talking?

Reading a few emails, reading several web pages, like bbc news (I can't tell exactly, but probably no more than 15-20 min of browsing per day), searching market for interesting apps but probably nothing installed ... and also probably no calls during this time (funny enough, I very rarely use this phone as a "phone") - so quite light usage as I said :)

Also, what matters also is good GSM signal! With similar usage I can't get even close to same hours while at work where GSM signal is going all the time from nothing to 3 bars, while home is steady good signal. The signal had similar effects on the battery on my previous phone (not a smart phone). I suppose this is because it keeps trying to find the cell and register to the network ... god knows why exactly, but it makes quite a difference when I'm at work compared to weekends at home.

As a new user I was having some issues with the battery life (only about 15 hours). I just put it down to playing with my new toy :)

I downloaded Auto Process Killer and now have that running all the time. Made a huge difference to the battery life. It's surprising how many apps keep running if you don't force-close them. I get about 60 hours of life too now.

Up time is how long it's been since you switched the handset on. Awake time is how much of that has been spent with the phone in an active state (ie, you or an app actually doing something). Your numbers 44/5 would indicate that you don't have any stray app keeping the phone awake when you're not needing it.

First thing I'd do is call whoever sold you the handset and tell them that the battery is defective. I know most mobile networks will normally just send a replacement.

Did what you suggested.. android system is the top-most entry.

Also i had kept the phone on charger for 7 1/2 hours while sleeping... i woke up and took it off the charger. Now its been 1 hour since i've taken it off the charger... and the up time appears as 8hrs 28 mins.. Awake time = 7:30 mins roughly.

This means the phone kinda didnt sleep while being on the charger for the 7 1/2 hours... is that normal??

Thanks once again to everyone for their replies..
