Help Best Home Screen App?

I like a lot of the HTC stock widgets, like the power control bar (or power switches), messaging widget, internet bookmarks widget and calendar widget. The HTC stock clock is functional too because you can get a weather forecast, set your alarm, and utilize the stop watch app all from there.

Express News makes a good news application. And pandora's widget is essential for me to pass the time at work :p

It kind of depends on what you're looking to do. This is also a great source of inspiration: http://androidforums.com/htc-incredible/70829-lets-see-your-incredible-layout-pun-intended.html.

I've tested them all over the past couple weeks.

Best overall - GDE

GDE offers a ton of themes, a lot of features, and some cool effects. Plus, it's very actively developed/updated, and doesn't bog the system down as much as BetterHome, which is probably the most feature-rich.

Cleanest - LauncherPro

This one is currently in beta, but it's really good. Very fast/smooth, and very clean. I'm keeping an eye on it since it's brand new. It could very well surpass GDE once the developer adds a couple key features. This is another one that's very actively updated/developed.

+1
I use LauncherPro after trying several others out. I like it a lot.

i bought GDE and have been playing around with it, not sure if i like it or not.

helixlauncher is pretty cool, but i wish it had the pinch-to-zoom for home-screen jumping like launcherpro does.

for right now, i'm still using sense and playing around with the others from time-to-time til (if) i find one i like more.

does anyone know if the color of the notification bar is changeable? with gde specifically, a lot of the themes show that bar being a different color but when i put them on my phone, it's always still black...

Yeah. Like some others have said, if you are not concerned with an abundance of features, stay away from GDE and Open Home (even though they are both very good) and get LauncherPro.

A word to the wise, though. ALL of the really good home replacements cost money. The only ones that are free either suck, or do not have all the features I personally look for. I would be willing to bet LauncherPro will not be free once the beta testing is done, unless they keep it as is and don't add any additional functionality.

I have been checking out some of the apps listed in this thread, but after looking at information on them, I still have a question. What is the purpose of getting a home replacement? Is it just "cool" or is it useful? By getting one, how would it benefit me? I have been tempted to do this but want to make sure it's worthwhile, especially on those that aren't free.

A lot of them add functionality. One of the things I really like is ones that have some kind of application shortcut tray like Open Home and GDE. Basically what I did was set up all my apps in folders with custom icons using Apps Manager, then put all the folders in an app tray, so all my apps are in a 4x1 widget, and I can fill the rest of the space on my home screens with widgets.

I posted my layout in the "Inredible" layouts thread if you want to take a look.

I still have a question. What is the purpose of getting a home replacement?

Valid question. For me personally it has saved me some space. The dock at the bottom of LauncherPro has a button for the phone, contacts, apps, messages and internet. Three of those used to be on the "desktop" part of the home screen. Now they are in the dock where previously I just had, apps, phone, add to home screen button. Also those five apps appear at the bottom of every home screen. So I don't have to go back to my "main" home screen to check the text message that came in or I can just one click open my browser. Very convenient.

I also make my own cradles for myself and friends so having the home screens be able to rotate in landscape mode is a nice feature since it is the easiest way make a dock that charges is in that mode IMO. While in landscape the dock buttons move and stick to the right side, not the bottom, making the screen more functional yet retaining those features throughout as in portrait.

The bottom line IMO is added functionality, efficiency of using some apps and streamlining of the UI and experience in general. Just my five cents. HTC did a great job but these just make it a little better.
