Root Official_1.0_OC is nearly perfect...

... for what I want out of my Eris

- Nav (got it w/ 2.1, thanks Big Red!)
- wireless hot-spot
- wired tethering
- Overclocking
- Sense (I'll admit I like it even if it is a resource pig)
- Stable / almost no bugs.
- Don't need/Don't want any of the social networking stuff (and associated bloat).
- Don't want battery eaters (oops, I mean live wallpapers).

The only feature that I wish I had was a keyboard with speech to text (I guess I saw it in EE 2.0b and kinda liked it). If I had that and working a2sd, I could probably stop fiddling with ROMs for the rest of my Eris' life.

Any suggestions? I haven't tried more than a couple of them; know of a ROM that fits that bill a little better than Official_1.0_OC ?

Sounds like you have everything you want with your phone and dont need to try out other roms. The one thing you will run into with other roms that you probably wont like is each one has its own little bug that hasnt been fixed. Evil eris keys dont light up still i think, aloysius doesnt get voicemail notifications, stuff like that. The trade off is that they are much faster than the roms that are closer to stock builds. I choose to deal with few bugs in favor of how fast the roms are.

As far as a2sd, I am not a fan of it. I know some people have to have it, but I see no need for it. The one time I tried it out I had huge issues with my phone and spent a whole day trying to get it back to a working state because something went wrong. I dont believe it will make your phone run any faster and some people have even said there is lag due to the slow class speed of their card when the system has to fetch info from the sdcard. Overclocking helps alleviate some lag but there is that issue.

What ROM are you using?

As for a2sd, I understand that at least one of the variants of it put the Dalvik cache onto the SD extN partition, and Class 2 SD cards are not fast enough to handle that - just about everything on the phone FC'ed when I tried it. (I wasn't aware of that until I tried it; I have a class 6 card, but by chance was using the class 2 card that came with the phone when I experimented with it.)

Certainly it's an inconvenience at the moment for switching between ROMs, especially because some ROMs with buggy implementations freeze if there is an extN partition on the card; not only that, but you have to use different backup and restore methodologies depending on the flavor of the ROM... (and have to remember in your head, "let see, this ROM supports it but I did not use it, so I should my non-partitioned SD card and do a regular Nandroid restore... meh!").

It (a2sd) is probably the final thing I will set up on whatever ROM becomes my "last" - at that point switching between ROMs will no longer be an issue.

As for need for it - at the moment I only have about 40 M of apps, and am not much of an app hoarder; but if I keep the phone for a couple of years, I'm pretty sure I'll need the space. (Software expands to fill all available space! The other day I came across a beta release of Wireshark for Android - 45 MB for a single app.)

This is exactly what happened with mine when I tried, everything FCed and the comp wouldnt recognize it as an ext drive so I couldnt copy another rom to the phone and reflash. Took me a full day to fix and after that I wasnt willing to try and get it working again.

This is a good idea, but my problem is that new roms are coming out all the time. I thought there was no way to beat senseable imo, then I found aloysius and am always going back to it. Doesnt mean I wont find a new one that I end up sticking with tho...plus if froyo ever gets ported or even gingerbread, you might be itching to try it, even after you have "settled" on a rom, but maybe then it will have a working version of apps2sd also...

That being said, I am fond of aloysius since to me it seems to have the fewest bugs. The guy who ported the rom just posted on xda in his thread that he was bored and was looking for new ideas for the next version because he said this one was so fast and stable. Only problem I have run into, which at times does get annoying, is that it doesnt give you a notification of new voicemails.

*sigh* I need to take a look at wireshark again too...
