Killing Calendar and OBEX services stops HTC Sync

I started killing the calendar and the obex services by going into settings>applications>running services.
This is resulted in the awake times significantly lower than the up time... however today i realised it also means when i want to connect the Desire to the pc to sync contacts/calendar with outlook.. the sync software on the phone does not launch at all. I went into the programs menu, but there is no launcher icon for the sync app.

I also setup the power control widget that comes with the phone on the homescreen and enabled sync from that... no go. The Sync app only came up when i rebooted the device and *DID NOT* kill the two calendar processes on the phone.

Any workaround?? I know rebooting is a solution, but i would appreciate if there's something quicker.:)

Sorry I couldn't help. But im curious as to wether or not you can update your accounts (refresh) with the connectivity calender stopped? I leave that one open and have no issues refreshing my gmail account for instance from the power control widget. It appears that going into calender and refreshing though does not return "calender connectivity" to the running services.

There was/is a bug that makes the battery drain with the calendar. For some reason it will keep the phone awake 100% of the time (under battery info there is a difference between 'Up Time' and 'Awake time').

Have you got a Flickr account sycned to your phone? That's what caused the problem for me... deleting the Flickr account and rebooting resulted in significantly better battery time for me.

The only other thing I could think of doing would be to just experiment with different sync settings for everything, maybe you'll get lucky and find the culprit.

Partially solved: Potential cause for excessive battery usage - xda-developers
You could try trawling through this thread to see if anyone has a similar problem to you (i.e. no Flickr account). Other than that, I'm all out of helpful advice short of factory resetting/getting the phone replaced.

What provider are you with? Some companies use there own ROMs.

It defeats me why anybody feels the need to blindly end processes on the Desire. There is no gain in phone performance and battery life.

It's a placebo.

Well, I have to agree with the op. I have not got task killers even installed on my phone. I just leave everything in the background. But this obex thing is a running process is indicating. Since stopping it, ive noticed no bad effect on my phone at all. And a decent battery performance gain. Now the gain may unrelated as ive done a few things (with same usage) but so ling as theres no bad effect, or restrictions that effect me, i dont see the harm. Like ive said already, I also stop gtalk, as I dont use it. But everything else i dont touch

I shared this in another post.....but thought I would share it too as well.

Obex service:

Object Exchange: a set of high-level protocols allowing objects such as vCard contact information and vCalendar schedule entries to be exchanged using either IrDA (IrOBEX) or Bluetooth. Symbian OS implements IrOBEX for exchange of vCards, for example between a Nokia 9210 Communicator and an Ericsson R380 Smartphone, and vCalendar.

Killing this has improved my battery life and I haven't lost any features.
