Someone please ease my mind...

So I have had my Inc for going on 1 month now and I'm constantly browsing the Market and websites looking for interesting apps. I download apps all the time. I also find myself purging my downloaded apps every few days and uninstalling the ones I rarely use. My fear is that I'm going to install too many apps and start noticing a difference in the performance of the phone. Do I have anything to worry about??

Side Note: I'm coming from a BB Curve and it would pretty much freeze up completely if I had too many apps installed.

at some point yes you will have too much installed but it will take alot. There is a ton more app space.

go to settings>sd card and phone storage> now look under phone memory to get an idea of how you are doing

I thought it was determined that the 8GB internal storage (or 6.6GB as we see it) is NOT available for app installation. For security, they still have a defined unmountable area for app installs that's either 512MB or 1GB. Someone want to confirm this?

That's the internal storage. Apps are installed to "Phone Memory"

You should see

Total Space: 748MB
Available Space: XXXMB

I have about 100 apps installed and have 534MB free

I am right there with you! I came from a Blackberry Storm also, and I swear I am not kidding when I tell you that I had 6 apps downloaded, and kept getting "application memory low, please select apps to delete" messages. I currently have 62 apps loaded on my Dinc (not including the stock apps that came pre-loaded!) and I am no where near the memory limits! This phone rocks.

As long as they arn't apps that run on start-up you should be fine. Even if you max out your storage that has nothing to do with performance. (Unless it uses it as extra RAM which I don't know for sure.)

But I would just make sure you don't have any apps that you don't need running when you turn the phone on. Thats what really hurts performance.

Flash memory and RAM are completely different things. Don't worry about the RAM the os takes care of that. Don't worry about the flash memory either, you have plenty of it. When android 2.2 goes OTA you'll be able to store your apps on the sd memory card. Theres no reason to worry about the memory at this stage, the incredible has plenty of it in all areas. When i had my droid eris then app storage space was a concern. I only had 160mb of space total and it was filled within a week. Thats why i sent it back and got the incredible. I'm using about 175mb of space with my apps now and things couldn't be better. On my eris i was down to less than 10mb of free space available and didn't have any issues, so don't worry about the incredible. You'd need to download and install alot more apps (5-6x what you've got on there now) before it'll become an issues. And by the time that happens we'll be able to store apps on the sd card. Also with the built in 8gb (6.6gb) of internal flash memory we might even be able to install apps to the internal flash instead of an sd memory card. So space should never be a concern.

Most apps that run on startup are just cached and run in the background idle, so they don't really eat up resources and can be closed by the os if the memory is needed for other tasks. I wouldn't worry about apps that boot at startup.

So in summary; download and install away!

Most big apps (like games, dictionaries, recipe apps, etc) will request access to your SD card anyway, and download additional files to the SD card, not the phone memory, so no worries there, either. Have fun!
