Syncing a "gmail" account

So this week my school switched over from using their own email servers and now they are using gmail for our emails. we still use, ouremail@sjcny.edu instead of using ouremail@gmail.com so im wondering is there a way i can sync this using the gmail app on the droid.

will the gmail app not care if it ends with @gmail.com or will it strictly look for that domain? I use a yahoo account for my personal email and not sure how well that will sync using the droid or will i have to open the browser and just visit yahoos website?

I guess I can't answer a question about whether a gmail app would do it as I have no idea if the gmail "app" is it's own app or their general email. You can setup gmail to forward with pop3 or IMAP though, so it's pretty much guaranteed you'll be able to get your email from your phone if it is technically gmail.

It needs to be a gmail.com addy. When you first get the Droid or any Google experience Android phone it will ask for your Google user info before it even gets going, and that is the one that will sync with gmail. You can use the regular email app though.

Yes, this will work fine. Here are two things I found while researching:
1) When setting up your email address, do not use "Enter" to go to the next line or it will do a validation and error on the @ sign. Use a different method such as just tapping in the next field to move the cursor there.
2) You cannot switch between two gmail accounts.

Also, be sure and sign up for non-apps applications using the same email address as your google apps email address so you can use things like google reader.

The above info is from Android 1.x and it could be changed for 2.x
