Htc G2 Hero memory questions

I have recently bought the G2 Hero but wasn't sure if i wanted an iphone or this one. the main reason was the internal memory. there seems to be differing opinions to what the memory is. some say its 512mb others 256. mine seems to have alot less but don't know if its due to the t mobile aspect of the phone, i.e. web and walk browser which is shite.
would just like to clear up for my own piece of mind what the momory should be and does it really matter it has such a low momory. HTC must have realised this and for some reason they decided to give it a low momory unlike the iphones 16G!!! or more!!!
any ideas guys and gals???

Nope, as the OS (Android) is designed to run in this config.

HTC must have realised this and for some reason they decided to give it a low momory unlike the iphones 16G!!! or more!!!

More internal NAND chips (flash memory) = greater cost + less space for other stuff, at a guess. Instead HTC went with expandable (external) storage. I've got 38MB available over 5 SDHC cards, which I believe is more than any iPhone can offer.

512MB ROM (system) and 288MB RAM (apps/storage)

The 512MB Flash ROM is for the OS and app storage. The 288MB RAM is for running the system.

The iPhone has 16-32GB of internal memory primarily for media storage (such as videos, music, photos, etc). The Hero has expandable microSD for this. Not only is microSD cheaper than internal flash (for the manufacturer and therefore the consumer as well), it also lets you choose the amount of space most appropriate for your needs and pricerange, from just a couple gigs for $10 to 16gigs for $45.

still not sure about the phone memory. when i first got it it had about 160 available now only 135mb. neither of these are near the 288 or 512 as in previous posts.

Operating System:Android 1.5 with HTC Sense
Internal Memory: 288MB
External Memory: MicroSD 2.0
ROM:512MB

mine had nowhere near the 288mb if that is the internal memory?

You'll never see the full 288MB of RAM available, even straight from the box. 160MB available internal memory is the norm.

Ok thanks slug. Will just have to put up with the low memory unless I root but not sure I want to do that as uncertain what its all about.

The Hero has 288MB of RAM. Some of it is reserved for the OS, leavings aboud 160MB for RUNNING apps, not storing them. As you install apps, it will appear that they are taking stored in RAM because the free RAM goes down, but that's only because some apps will start automatically. Apps will only take up space in RAM when they are running.

Then there's the 512MB of Flash ROM. That is where the OS and apps are stored. The reason you dont see the full 512MB when you first get the phone is because the OS takes up somewhere over 100MB. Also, as you install more apps, the remaining space will go down because this is the same memory the apps are stored in.

It's not really low, it's just working as designed.
