sync HTC Hero on Orange with Mac OS 10.4.11

If you haven't already found a useable solution to your needs, check out Spanning Snyc which has a version that supports 10.4.11 and neatly ports and updates your iCal and Address Book info to sync with Google (which should then sync over the air with Hero).

It does cost ($25/year or $65 to buy it outright) but that can be a lot cheaper than a new computer if you're like me and trying to squeeze another year out of a Mac that tops out at 10.4.11.

I started using it the other day and it works very neatly and easily transfered my iCal info (a few elements don't always mesh) and my contacts. You may need to do a little playing around with default alarm settings on your Hero and Google to get them to recognize the reminders you've set on iCal.

The groups I'd set up in Address Book did not make the transfer. Perhaps there's a way to make it happen automatically (there's a screen to select transferring only selected groups) but I had ported all contacts at once.

Most recent issue I've encountered is that I changed an address in Address Book on my Mac but it still hasn't shown up on the Hero. I thought it was Spanning Sync not doing its job but when I checked Google, the new info was there (just hasn't updated in the Hero for some odd reason).

Overall, I'm pleased with Spanning Sync -- and the best part is that I can keep using the elegant and user friendly interface of iCal and Address Book for data entry.

An alternative would be to open Address Book, select all and then choose File -> Export and export as a vCard file (all of your contact info will then go in to that one file).

You can then go to Gmail on the web, select Contacts and under the More Actions pulldown at the top of your contact list, Import that vCard file.

You can follow the same process in reverse to get from your Gmail/Contacts to your Address Book in Tiger.

heya, Earlymon!

Thanks for the suggestion/instruction. I had been operating without the "groups" being transferred to my phone until I used your advice. I still need to test how this configuration of Spanning Sync/Google ota to Hero will handle updates/corrections to individual contacts (preserving the group labels, allowing changes to group labels, etc) but you have certainly helped me increase the functionality of contacts on my phone. You ROCK!
