For many of us we have Apple to thank for all these wonderful devices and mobile platforms. I am not a big fan of Apple but the truth be told,they have spured competion to the fullest in the mobile phone market.Remember every year we would get a refresh of the Motorola Razr? When I first got the Palm Treo everyone laughed at me for having such a big phone. Now having a 3.5 or greater inch screen is the status quo. It is very hard to say this but THANK YOU STEVE JOBS> Please make more state of the art phones so every one can steal your ideas and make them better and not proprietary

I'm not saying they did but we have to admit before the Iphone we were getting the same boring phones without any kinds of customizations.I for one am not a fan of Apple but they have spurred competition and forced these cellphone companies to make innovative products. I have to kind of agree.

Comparing my Hero to my buddies iphone sucks as well, they still have the best "fun" apps and his iphone is fast, non laggy and runs smooth as butter..its a few years old too as my hero is only a couple months old =\

Anyway, I love all the competition going on, the end result is better phones everywhere. Hopefully the EVO can live up to the hype and be a fast, crisp...smooth as butter android phone. ~!

They didn't invent everything, but they pushed it all into the mainstream enough to stir up a ton of healthy competition. Without the iPhone, it's very unlikely we'd have Android today. Even if we did, it'd probably use a stylus.

They did and Steve Jobs had all the original phenomenal ideas. The EVO is not anywhere near as good as the new iPhone.

I have to admit that Apple really flipped the smartphone market upside down with the release of their iPhone. Whats even crazier is that outdated iPhones are just as fast as phones that are being released today.

If the next iPhone is really packing an A4, other smartphones are gonna be left in the dust speed wise.

1.) Android was in development BEFORE iphone.

2.) WinMo/Symbian/Blackberry/Maemo would still exist, and get better.

3.) iPhone did spur competition, no doubt.

4.) Apple didn't invent anything they use. They stole it (illegally) from other people. Including the name "iPhone" (from cisco)

5.) Apple didn't even come up with the app market. It use developers who did. Apple just saw it as a cash register and made an "official channel" for it. (app store)

6.) to OP: No offense, really, but I have seen alot of trolls post with a style like your posting. First handful of posts are like "well I really don't like apple but" or " i support android but" or "apple invented everything and iphone has this and that, but im all for android"

7.) I never owned a RAZR. They were utter crap. Lol.

Do you think Microsoft would even have windows if it weren't for apple?
And I love android, because apple is out to see the wizard with At&T exclusivity, and slow playing growth for money. I love a product that works- this is being written on a new macbook pro - but i don't love control solely for $ sake. I think apple roles improvements out slowly, from lack of competition. Now with competition, apple is force to quit nickel and dimeing everybody. I love apple products, but I am not paying for their overpriced deal with at&t.

I hope us consumers realize, that blind loyalty to any company means we lose. We need to realize, that blind loyalty leads to a companies laziness. Google and Apple are much more alike than any of us with either one of them.

I agree, for as much hate Apple seems to get lately competition is a good thing. And I'd probably be the first to day I hope Apple does do something amazing with the next iPhone, that will only push Google/HTC and other OEM's to release better software and hardware.

They didn't just push the competition ahead, they pushed technology 10 years in advance, overnight. At the time the iPhone was released, Blackberry type devices were the status quo, and there was no big push to move to anything better. I remember the first time I saw an iPhone, it seemed completely surreal. It was like something out of Star Trek, that's how far ahead of the market they were. The iPhone was announced over 3 years ago, and only now are Apple's competitors releasing phones that match the iPhone's functionality.

I'm not a fan of everything Apple does, but I am a fan of any company that advances technology through creativity and innovation. They deserve the props.

OK Back on topic, I Thank Palm (well Handspring) more then anything else, They came out w/ the first REAL smartphone, if is wasn't for them, then RIM to lay the groundwork then none of this would be going on like it is today, I thank them more b/c IMHO (and I am an apple COMPUTER fanboy) the iPhone is nothing more then a iPod on steriods that you can happen to make calls on (someti..........................

Steve (Blow)jobs had a few good ideas yes, but the proprietary aspects of what he promotes will only inspire others to do better. The new iPhone will not beat the Evo, since the evo was made to show Apple to slowly but surely remove the stick from their butts.

Ferrari's, Lambo's, BMW, Porsche, Audi, they are all great in their own right. Phones can be the same since opinions are truly like Steve Jobs...woops, I mean @ssholes

People need to really give the iPhone the credit it deserves. Yeah the CEO sucks, and their business practices are draconian, but they were ahead of EVERYONE.

The iPhone was released in 2007, what year is it now? Mid 2010, 3.5 years later and it has taken an entire fleet of Android phones to contend with a single phone on a single network.

When the iPhone was released it shook up the smartphone market and nothing was even close to what it was capable of. Just now we are seeing some healthy competition, and WinMo7 is no where in sight. It has taken MS almost 4 years to come up with an answer.

On top of this, Apple has the App store ecosystem,which has generated insane amounts of revenue for developers. There were apps before the iPhone, but nothing of this magnitude.

Ok if that was the case that Android was developed before the Iphone.Do you think that Android would be the platform it was today if they were not competing with the likes of Apple? Microsoft shoved that outdated Windows Mobile down our throats for years until Apple made them change their way of thinking.I look at my Treo WX and can't believe that this was what I was settling for all this time.Then I look at my Touch Pro and say "Wow this is almost identical to my Treo WX."I have set my hatred for Apple aside and I am looking at this with a unbiased point of view.These are great times for us as consumers of smartphones.

This is blind fanboyism at best. Let me create an analogy to show you why.

Nintendo didn't invent video games, but they were the ones who propelled video games into the mainstream market.

Do you see where I'm getting at? Its not about who invented what, its about who is able to seize the idea and run with it. Give credit to the companies who are able to do this for consumers and leave your fanboyism at the door.

In development by who, google? More Like google bought a company with the ideas. And if it was in development long before apple, with what speed were they developing it with?

People who picked up an iphone knew the difference, just like investors and everyone else. This is why microsoft, palm, blackberry, and google all knew they had to step it up. If you missed it I'm sorry.

You are exactly right.All these companies are scrambling to put something together. Palm would have never come up with WebOS. We would still be using Windows Mobile in it's present form.

I typically fall under the "Apple hater" label but I give credit where it's due. They definitely helped push smart phones into the consumer sector and got manufacturers and the makers of mobile OSes to focus more on UI. I was a huge fan of smart phones before the iphone but they really did push the bar up in terms of build and ui. They weren't first at a lot of things but they were the first to push thin devices with large capacitive screens. I'm just glad that like all tech, other companies like Google and HTC incorporated the things that worked well like big capacitive screens and intuitive browsing into less locked down and controlled options. I will take function over form any day but they helped grow the market for devices that have both.

Symbian, WebOS, WinMo, Android OS, RIM

The only OS I see here that is worth my time is Android OS and the rest can be thrown in the trash. Its quite frustrating to think that these other players think they can just sit around and not innovate. No wonder they're all losing market share and the only one gaining is the iPhone OS and Android OS.
