Help HTC Desire battery problem

I've had my Desire for about 2 weeks now and I'm lucky if I get 24 hours out of it with minimal use! This is with Wi-Fi, 3G, GPS all turned off.

I had it fully charged at about 5pm yesterday, used it for sending a few texts and nearly 24 hours later it's asking me to connect it to a charger! Surely this isn't right?

It's a smartphone, get used to it! I don't see why people have a problem with plugging it in overnight - I do this as a matter of course. It's not like it's a problem having it tethered to a plug socket, as I myself am asleep and don't need it to be portable during that time. I wake up in the morning, and it's fresh as a daisy for another day's usage.

(I find that unplugging it at around 7am lasts me until midnight comfortably on medium usage - 20% or so remaining. If it has had heavy usage during the day then a quick top-up either at work on a USB plugged into the computer, or in the car on the way home, or even just plug it in for half an hour when I walk through the door while I put the dinner on keeps it going all evening. For the masses of power-hungry applications and functions this is hardly worth complaining about!)

24! Mine is on 6% after 11 hours. Just a few short calls, 20 emails, 28 texts and an hour of internet on 3 G.

Love the phone but I need sommat that lasts from dawn till the night bus.

That doesn't sound right. If that usage is accurate you should be getting twice that.

Search this forum for some of the other battery threads, you may have some buggy apps installed that are draining your battery.

OP - 24 hours is good going for a smartphone.

If you're really using it that little, then no, it doesn't sound right at all. What have you got running? 3G? Wireless? GPS? edit: sorry, I see you said they were turned off.

Suppose we'll just do the usual battery thread drill here:

Go to settings -> about phone -> battery use and tell us what the percentages are there.

Also, dial *#*#4636#*#* and select battery history.

Under 'other usage' check the figure for 'running'. A normal figure should be less than 30% (give or take 5%)

If it's abnormally high, you have a program preventing your phone from sleeping.

In the same menu, select 'partial wake usage' from the drop down menu. You should see what's been preventing your phone from sleeping.

oh and I'd ignore all the anecdotal tales about battery life on here. Any time a thread like this pops up you get some liar claiming he's been awake for 72 hours-straight doing nothing but playing with his phone on wi-fi, gps and maximum brightness and the battery is still at 98/%. It's all bs!

It's a smartphone, what do you expect?
It's a smartphone, get used to it!
Now that's just not nice. It may be the truth, harsh as it may be, but that's no reason to be impolite. He obviously expects better. Remember, this is for minimal use -- if you require a tad more than minimal use, we're talking half a day, which might well be less than a mobile worker's day trip.

Furthermore, I emphatically do not agree that this kind of battery life is reasonable. I've had pda's and phones that lasted over a week on a charge, and I can't fathom why they call this new breed of smartphones 'progress'. These things are dumber, slower, and worse, and yet people seem to be content now that the devices can do colour, and Facebook.

I don't see why people have a problem with plugging it in overnight
He didn't say he doesn't. But one might wish to go on a weekend trip, or just a full day of sailing or going somewhere with neither 5V nor 220/110V? And you know, people might get "caught in the rain" and have forgotten their charger or usb-cable for a day...

@damodamo123:
- I've uninstalled my battery monitors. They may provide me with a forecast, but they all gobble up too much juice in order to provide it.
- Also, another thing that can really burn through your battery is poor reception -- my Galaxy gets just one or two 'bars' for the majority of the day, and this means it needs to turn the radio power way up.

'tiss my experience that the biggest battery drainer is switching between connections.

At home in a "G" signal area with wifi and sync running full time I can get loads of life out of the battery.

Go to work with Wifi off, but switching between g, 3g & H all day long sucks the battery dry at a fast rate of knots, but I can now still get over 24hrs before charging.

Hi Guys I'm a completely new android user, and new to this forum, and mine has the exact same issue as above.

Coming from an iPhone I'm happy with overall usage, getting about 36 hrs with fairly low usage but do check it a lot, but the fact it drops from 100% to 90% a few mins after charging seems strange. Is this normal?

Hi, I am a new andorid user and I would appreciate anyones help regarding battery life. I do fully understand that these smartphones are going to be more power hungry than other mobiles but I do feel that i am getting significantly less life than others post on here. I have usually 12 -16 hours which is considerably less than others suggesting thay can get up to 36 hours.

Of course I have been looking around this forum for any solutions and have started doing my own test. Last night went to bed on a full charge, unplugged the phone, turned off wifi, 3g, gps, sync and brightness and then decided to put it in airplane mode anyway. After just 6 hours, this morning phone has just 85% showing - this cant be right right?

I follwed the suggestion from above

Also, dial *#*#4636#*#* and select battery history.

!

and the fiugure for running is 98% so I guess this is the cullprit...what do I now do to find out what is causiung phone to not sleep?

all help appreciated.

New Data.....
There are Good Batteries, and Duff Batteries!

My Reasoning:-
We have had a 'Desire' for some time now, which had a typical life of 12-15 hours.
We got a second 'Desire' The battery from the second 'Desire', in the origional 'Desire' (without changing setup etc for saving battery etc) is lasting several times longer.

A little recearch regards the part nuumbers would be apreciated. our 2 batteries have diff numbers. This is my data, can you guys add to it please, part number and short / long life.

35h00132-05m - Short Life
35h00132-06m - Long Life

See if we get definitive proof!

I have a 35h00132-06m - battery. My battery sometimes gives me 18 hours and at other times 12 hours. The best I have got is 25 hours. Note the usage and settings are the same on both these occasions.

I have the -06m battery and I always considered mine to be rubbish. My usage isn't always consistent so it's difficult to judge whether I'm being unreasonable with my expectations.

I always have a spare charger/adaptor handy, just in case, but that doesn't help when I have the occasional meeting in London and my battery dies on the way home

I went as far as buying a spare battery off Play but they ran out of stock with no indication of when they were getting any back in so I cancelled the order.

In have a 06M battery on a new phone (only about 1 week old). With light - moderate usage (i.e. WiFi, 3G, GPS turned off most of the time & only enabled when I need them, and Task Killer keeping unecessary apps from running when not needed), I am getting between 2-3 days out of a full charge. As I type this, my battery was last charged on Monday evening @ around 10pm and it's about to run completely flat (currently @ 5%).

I'm still fully charging & discharging my battery to try & condition it. So far each charge seems to yield a better results, although this will be the 3rd full charge/discharge I have done so early days yet. I figured on doing 5 full charge/discharge cycles before just plugging it in overnight / every other night.

This may or may not be related, but i'll ask here anyway... seems to be a charge related issue.

I put my Desire on charge (either connected to computer or on AC charger) and seems once it reaches 100% charge, charging stops... whilst still connected to charging device, battery level drops over time. Had it back to store once, where battery was replaced, but seems it's still doing this.

Now, other devices I've had in the past stay at 100% when connected, or whilst being used when still on a charger... My Desire seems to not do this.

In others experiences, is what I'm seeing normal, or do I seem to have an issue here? In Australia, phone has latest version of 2.1 software (2.2 not available through Telstra yet) and I'm not prepared to root the phone.

Happens when I'm on AC charger or connected to computer, no matter what connection mode I have selected on the phone eg: charge only, HTC sync, disk drive or internet sharing.... no difference noticed.

Have turned off as much background stuff as I can. Even noticing now it's connected to the computer, but there's no charge symbol on the battery, though it says 100% charged. Would have thought it would indicate I'm still connected.

Has anyone else noticed this, is it normal, or do I need to take it back yet again?

Hi, I bought my Desire 2 days ago and am completely new to Android...
I fear I'm gonna sound like such a noob here but can someone please tell me why after 6 hours from 100% charge, my battery is already down to 29%?!
Ive had GPS and Bluetooth off all day,
WiFi on for about an hour this morning whilst I was still at home,
And have only sent a few messages, made a few calls emails etc.
Surely my battery should be lasting at least 18 hours? Looking at the previous responses to this thread there seem to be a lot of people who are getting definately a lot more than barely 10 hours of battery a day.

What can I do to help fix this?

Thanks

To all of you guys who are complaining about the battery life, I have a question:
Are you using a task killer?

There is evident proof that task killers actually make the battery life worse then better.
I've also seen some posts in this thread that show that you have no idea how Android works.
(Example: Someone is using a task killer to prevent apps from running in the background)

If you don't believe me, read lekky's article about it.

BTW: I can easily get a day out of it with heavy use. This includes: a lot of switching between mobile data signals, using the web browser alot, listening to music almost constantly (For who doesn't know, music apps prevent the phone from sleeping) etc etc.
So yeah, I'm happy with it :D

Let me share my experience, someone may find it useful

Yesterday I have unplugged my new HTC at 2300 (it took it 5 hours to fully charge over the desktop usb). I have turned off internet, WiFi, Bluetooth, ruining programs, and put it to sleep. Woke up at 7 AM and battery was at 89%. So theoretically on standby battery can last almost 80 hours.

At 7 turned on internet, checked emails etc. noting much. went for work and wile I was in the office Ive turned of internet again. turned it on again at 12 when I left office and it is on until now. I made about 15-20mins calling, downloaded 3 applications and played with them for a half an hour, exchanged around 20 mails and maybe 15 texts. Used WiFi for 15 mins maximum, and did all kinds of setups and customizing for approximatively one hour and now as Iam tipping (9pm) battery is at 40%

If I use it this way autonomy will be around 40 hours which is not so bad, blackberry would last maybe 50-60 hours.

Tonight I will leave internet on and see what the percentage will be. I will inform you tomorrow :)

Sorry for my bad English
