Samsung software updates

imo opinion if samsung hold true to form, you will never see a 2.2 update for the galaxy s ...or at least in the next six months ....they don't give a crap about supporting the phones they have sold, only about marketing the new ones they are working on

But think about it....
This is a new phone which is going to sell world wide and to a lot of parties.
It would be financial lunacy if Samsung did not push the Galaxy S out to new customers with an older 2.1 operating system.

It's my guess the initial batch will see v2.1 but once Froyo hits general release surely Samsung would then update new sales models to include 2.2 which would mean existing sold models SHOULD be entitled to an upgrade..... just my 2c.

I agree, if samsung wants to be competitive with android phones they need to keep on top of their products. Especially ones that are for a worldwide market and supposedly coming to the biggest ones in the US. HTC just announced that most of their phones will be supported and updated as fast as they can do it, I assume all their high end models will be included as well as future sets. So unless samsung wants to fall behind and not be taken as serious as people are taking HTC, Moto, etc., they will change their product support strategies.

With Google trying address fragmentation, this would make even more sense that companies, especially top ones, keep pace with Google to a degree.

U r right samsung is very very bad with updating their software but since 50% of their handsets are going to be android based handsets so it will be interesting what they are going to do with this galaxy s

Don't most phonemakers give you only one official rom upgrade anyway? HTC phones have the benefit that they have XDA developers making custom roms for them, so it seems like their always getting the latest roms. But those roms aren't official roms from HTC. I'm hoping that this Samsung gets popular enough that there will be a developer community for it and there will be custom roms as well.

We've just opened up a section for the Samsung i9000 Galaxy S in xda-devs so expect to see activity there on all matters relating to this.

They haven't GAVE BEHOLD 2 USERS NOT ONE OS upgrade we got a maintenance update from t-mobile for issues like sd card randomly unmounting and signal dropping etc etc but that shiit didn't even fix it. HTC got official OS updates. They are and will always get the latest makes official. HTC phones got official updates. from the beginning 1.5 to 1.6 and soon to be 2.1 and 2.2. HTC updates

You obviously aren't aware of the problems of custom roms for touchwiz. So let me fill ya in. The reason behold 2 hasn't custom rom'd to 2.1 is because some of the important drivers aren't open source or lie within touchwiz. most definitely touchwiz isn't open source. Custom Roms won't be easy for samsung touchwiz phones if what I think is going to happen with this phone is correct. They are going to do the same crap they did with behold 2. lock it down tight with touchwiz 3.0 You have been warned.

Although not directly affected to what we are talking about but the Behold 2 uses the older Touchwiz.
The i9000 uses the much better and unknown for cooking Touchwiz 3.

That's interesting. I would assume that no manufacturer is crazy about their phones being rooted (which would explain the dreaded voided warranty and the lack of a "Root Me!" button), but you're saying Samsung actually makes it more difficult to root? Can anyone elaborate on this?

Thanks for the insight. I don't expect Samsung phones to be as open as HtC phones but it can't be as locked down as say an iphone, can it? I mean I remember seeing custom roms for Samsung omnia on XDA and PPCgeeks. I guess the worse that can happen is that Samsung doesn't update their phones, and this phone turns into an iphone essentially (which the GAlaxy S already resembles anyway )

My concern with the "difficult to root" comment was this: I want a nice android phone and I'm stuck on AT&T until my income goes up a bit more (my parents have a sweet family plan with an older base fee that you just can't beat these days that I have a line under). If the Galaxy S comes to AT&T, it's hardware looks to rival the Evo's. I'm afraid AT&T will cripple it, but I was hoping to get around that by rooting. I also don't care if Samsumg fails to upgrade the software if I can root. But I'm also assuming that "hard to root" is not the same as "impossible" ...

requires a custom kernel to root 99% of samsungs android phones. with their new rfs and having to compiling a kernel without breaking it from and incomplete source from samsung, yeah its VERY difficult, not impossible but very difficult and with this new phone with new touchwiz it will be as locked down as a iphone if not MORE so

yeah, and pigs can fly ....samsung are very good at making promises.

even if they do miraculously release an 'official' update, you can bet that the online or ota update will not work and you will have to wipe flash the phone to update

Thanks OP. You make a good point. As little as I have been able to find about Verizon and this phone, it doesn't look like VZW will be one of the first to have it. If Verizon doesn't release it with 2.2, I'm going to wait and see if the Shadow releases with 2.2. I don't want to take the chance on not getting 2.2.

Hi, everyone. I'm new here. To debunk some of the myths of Samsung phones on updates, I currently own a WinMo Samsung i780. To be frank, when I bought my device it was only on WinMo 6.0. I did went to the service centres for 2 minor updates, before they release a software update to 6.1. In my country, they had stopped at that. I'm not sure if they have released another 6.5 update, but I cooked my own rom which is to 6.5.

I do have to admit that the update is extremely slow, but nevertheless, the update still happened.

By the way, I'll be receiving my i9000 on Monday evening. The reason for me to purchase this is the screen, both in size and in display! This will also be my first android phone. I am certain that Froyo will happen, but beyond that, your guess is as good as mine. Having said that, I uses the phone what it sets out to do, to call and to receive calls.

To the TS (threadstarter), the grass is always greener the other side. If you choose to buy the Desire, you will miss that amazing display. If you decide on the i9000, you are afaid about the support for future software upgrades. My guess is that no phone is the perfect one, just get one where it suits your needs.

Samsung Galaxy Original still stuck on 1.5 they won't upgrade them.

Samsung Behold 2 Stuck on 1.5 and was PROMISED 2.0 but now they are claiming that its not upgradeable past 1.6 which is a bs claim because one of our developers has 2.1 working just needs certain drivers which are not found in the source released by samsung

Win Mo is not the same thing as Android and are you seriously saying you prefer a SuperAmoled over receiving the most current updates??? Did you even read the past claims?
