Anyone with an EVO try tethering vita PDANet?

I'm interested to know if all of the tethering apps work with 4G and 3G or are 3G only. Not sure if it requires additional programming or how all of that is handled.

I'm sure it'll work fine with 4G.

The OS takes care of differentiating if your data connection is Wi-Fi or 1xrtt or 3G or 4g, etc. After Android figures it out at a low level, it makes the data connection available to its applications whom don't have to care about what the connection is. If this wasn't the case, then all of our data-connected apps would have to be re-written to support 4G.

PDANET might work differently, of course. It reaches a bit lower into the OS than other apps typically do, after all.

I'll be doing my testing at home, and yes I do have WiMAX there. However it is not strong/solid.

Nonetheless, I'll try a variety of permutations against my laptop. I won't be doing this until I get home this evening.

maybe for comparison, try a test with then one without the 4G turned on, and see if there is a noticable difference.

I am wondering why you guys are interested in PDAnet. Evo comes with HTC's "Internet Sharing" baked into Sense UI. When you connect the phone to a computer, you can do wired tethering instantly, without paying extra or running another app.

Any advantages to PDAnet?

this is the first I've heard of this.

I just want to be able to watch internet TV @ work w/o using thier network, That and netflix streaming...

so I will see that everytime I plug USB into it?

Yes. Unless you check Don't ask me again or Remember or w/e.

I wonder if you get the same options on a Mac.

Yes, this worked on my Ubuntu machine as well. I'm assuming it works on any computer.

Awesome - and that's on Sprint's shipping ROM, right? (Well, as far as we can tell, anyhow.) As in Sprint didn't remove that functionality?

Yes. It's on the shipping ROM if we assume the Google I/O ROM is the shipping ROM.

I'm wondering the same thing. I thought I read somewhere that the built-in USB tether only worked in conjunction with the HTC Sync software. I'm hoping that's not the case!

Out of the box, Windows 7 does not recognize the Evo. When I installed HTC Sync, it must have installed some drivers as well, and afterwards Windows 7 could use the internet connection from the Evo. But the HTC Sync program has nothing to do with Internet Sharing.

I guess Sprint figures that once the phone gets rooted it's going to happen anyway so they did that. I'm so pumped now......where's my phone Best Buy. Oh wait my appointment is at 10am on the 4th of June. Think we can bump it up?

Haha I don't think Sprint had a say in that. Looks like HTC's work.

Note: TETHERING is not an additional charge. Mobile Hotspot, i.e. transforming your Evo into a wifi access point, THAT is an extra $30 a month.

This is mainly semantics. "Tethering" doesn't just refer to wired connection. Typically that's what you call any phone-as-modem setup. It's more a marketing thing to call it "mobile hotspot" since "tether" makes you think of a line.

Also, it's *Sprint's* tethering/hotspot/whatever app that will cost $30/month. Not saying that is the only option. Carriers often sell branded services which cost more than third party options simply because they can and many people will never research other options.

Also I would put money on other tethering apps not working with the 4G radio yet. I would love for this to be wrong but I would almost bet that at least as of now, Sprint is the only one with the software needed to bridge a Wimax and Wifi connection on this phone. Not saying others won't do it but don't be surprised if the Sprint option is the only way to share Wimax either wired or wirelessly for the immediate future.
