Root Joey's Kernel - DE03 - SDX

Does the Source SDX kernel (joey's) require the phone to be rooted prior to installing?

Or, can the SW Updater be used with this kernel on an official (unrooted) 2.1 Moment?

If so, which version of the SW Updater can be used (and where do you get it)?

Thanks,
Eph

The easiest way to do this is to use his program that is listed in the first part of his post. You select the options you wish, it creates a zip file for you. You copy that zip file to the root of your sd card and power off.

Hold down the down volume key, the call key and the end key at the same time until the phone boots. From there, apply zip from sd card and you are done

You're talking about this, right?

And, this can be done to a previously unrooted, stock 2.1 Moment??

Sweet!

Any other recommended settings on that page? Should I install a recovery? Which one?

To do it that way he has to have Joey's Recovery correct? I was trying to help him in a PM, but I couldn't remember all the steps. Can he install the recovery with new updater, or does he have to revert to the old?

Chibucks,

Thanks for the help! Do you mind walking me through this, please? I'm sure others that upgraded to the official 2.1 wouldn't mind either.

What are the specific steps we should take as stock, unrooted 2.1 Moment owners? What settings would you recommend on this page?

Thanks again!
Eph

I'm pretty sure your first step is to get the old/patched new updater. Have you done that yet?

Steps I'd take coming straight from an official 2.1

1. Install one of the custom recoveries on your phone through the old SW Updater or patched new SW Updater. Put the recovery TAR in the Binary folder and remove any other files in there. Flash it the same way you did the official 2.1

2. Use Joey's ROM builder to create an update.zip - pick the options you want and like and put the zip file onto your sdcard.

3. Download the stock theme template zip onto your sdcard as well (if you're applying a theme, you'll want to load this first)

4. Boot into recovery (vol down + call + end), clear davlik cache (under data), and apply zip from sdcard the stock theme template. Reboot your phone and let it load up - it'll stay on the boot animation for a little longer as your davlik is getting rebuilt. (if you're not applying a theme, then you can skip to 5)

5. Boot into recovery and apply zip from sdcard and choose the created update.zip (from the ROM builder)

6. Reboot and voila, you should be there.

Awesome - thanks! Which customer recovery would you recommend? Latest (3.1.1)?

I assume that, since I am loading a custom recovery before applying the ROM zip, I should not add one to the ROM zip in the ROM builder, right?

Is this the stock template theme you are referring to?
http://forum.sdx-developers.com/theme-files/de03-stock-theme-template-zip/

Do the ROM zip and the theme zip both go in the root directory of the sdcard?

Any experience with any of the other customizations in the ROM builder?

Thanks!

I would use Joey's recovery, but that's just because it is Joey's. Here is the link: joeykrim - SDX - Recovery - 2.1.3 - 4/7/2010
I don't know the answer to the question on whether you need to check it on the Rom builder, I would like to know the answer though.

as duratime said, joey's works great, forcystos's are nice too - they have more 'features', which can be good or bad depending on whether you know what you're doing. :)

the rom zip and template zip both go on the root of the sdcard, and yes, you have the right template linked...

i manually put everything on, so I haven't used Joey's wonderful tool... but have heard nothing but good things about joey's method... plus, it simplifies things.

looking through his list, i have:
LiveWallpapers running, HQ Youtube, 3D Gallery, Kryket's Boot animation.

I'm not using a theme right now, but have bits and pieces of people's themes (using Burst's Leo dialer and contacts, a custom lock screen, custom launcher/helix).

For the recovery, just leave it unchecked since you're flashing one first... unless you want to change it, then pick one.

You can leave a few more of the options blank as well to keep your default.

Hope that helps.

Perfect! I can't believe this can be done to a stock 2.1/unrooted Moment!

(Just wish there was something analogous for the Hero! With the Hero at stock 2.1, we're screwed until they figure something out. Hope it's as elegant and easy!)

Thanks again to you both!
I'll let you know how it goes!

One more question (for now). :)

Once this is all complete, is there an easy way to get more home screen pages?

You can get that now. Try Helix or Launcher Pro, I've used both. I'm using Launcher Pro now, seems a little smoother, but Helix has the ability to customize the button (new buttons that you don't have now) on the sides of the tray. These are both free apps in the market.

Note: some of the 'Themes' come with these launchers as part of it... just a heads up. sometimes it'll overwrite the regular launcher with a custom one.

OK - another one already! :D

Which of stock apps have you removed successfully?

Duratime - did your battery life improvement come as a result of removing some of these apps? Or, with this ROM, does removing them just clean up some space?

I only removed a few apps (Moxier, Nascar, Bejewled), so I'm not sure about that. I'm contemplating removing a few more like Sprint TV and the football one. It is the kernel that I feel improves the battery life so much. I never install the ROM using the builder.

That is exactly why I don't use the themes. It takes me longer to set up the 7 home screens than anything else on the phone. I actually made a spreadsheet of the location of every contact, widget, and app. that I have on the home screens, so if I switch launchers, I can reconfigure back to how I like it.

Hey - great advice, guys!

Another Q:
We've got two Moments in my house. One with the official 2.1 release, the other with the official/stock pre-CL14 release (yes, this son is VERY lazy and skeptical).

Can all of these procedures be done with this pre-CL14 phone, as well?
Just use the CL14 updater again and go through all the same steps?

Yes. I would get the 2.1 update with the recovery already added from SDX. It will save you a step.
