SlingPlayer Mobile expanding to Android platform

Placeshifting technology developer Sling Media's SlingPlayer Mobile video application is poised to make its debut on Google's Android platform in the near future. SlingPlayer Mobile enables users to stream live and recorded television content from their home entertainment system to their smartphone--according to the Sling Media website [1]http://www.slingbox.com/get/android-signup [2], consumers can sign up to receive email notification when the app goes live in the U.S. Chances are the wait won't be long--GadgetNews reports Sling is showing off the application at this week's GDGT event in Austin, Tex., with an official launch slated for this summer.
Sling Media first issued [3] SlingPlayer Mobile for Apple's iPhone in May 2009, but the $29.99 app was the subject of considerable debate because it did not include 3G support--although Apple operator partner AT&T took the fall for the controversy that followed, contending 3G streaming would consume too much network capacity, Sling said the service was WiFi-only at Apple's request. In early February 2010, AT&T announced [4] it would support SlingPlayer Mobile across its 3G network following a series of tests, and Apple approved [5] the application for sale in its App Store days later.

Yeah, I was about to go the HAVA route as well, but now Dish Network has a box with Sling "built-in"...It will cost the same as my current dual-tuner box, which does not have a DVR. Figure it will be a 2-for-1 STB upgrade, where I won't have recording conflicts with my girl's soap operas.

I was following the HAVA / Sling battle quite intently for a few months this winter, trying to decide on which was the better option to go with. I lost interest after neither one was coming out with a dedicated Android app. It is encouraging that Sling was the first to drop one. I may have to drop by BestBuy and check out pricing again this weekend...

gave up waiting on sling. I bought a hava player for $100 and have my directv on my droid 2 months ago already

How well does the HAVA product work on the DROID? Do you need to be on a WIFI for streaming? Are you using ORB to stream?

For sling, no.

For the HAVA "Vulkano" (new Android compatible box), I think there is a fee for some of the more advanced features.

Wasn't the Vulkano supposed to be out in April?

Not sure...looks like it should be out already:

Monsoon's HAVA Video Streaming and Place-Shifting Devices: Official Press Releases, HAVASoft

"Pricing and Availability
The Vulkano for iPad will be available in Q1 2010. The Vulkano comes in two different configurations. Vulkano and Vulkano Pro have a projected selling price of US$199 and US$299 respectively. Vulkano will come with 4GB of flash memory, while the Pro version will come with a 250GB hard-drive. Vulkano products will be available in March of 2010 through leading on-line etailers, and can be directly purchased with a lifetime or term based subscription from Monsoon (Play Your TV Anywhere - Video Streamer; Place-Shifter; Mobile TV).

A customized version of Vulkano is slated to be available at all the leading retailers worldwide starting this summer. This product will be offered by a Monsoon technology licensee."

That is for iPad... Still, I couldn't find anywhere online where you could actually purchase.

Initially, the Vulkano was shown (when it was shown to be out in March 2010) running on the Droid. Looks like Monsoon/HAVA changed gears to support the Apple platform. Who knows how long it will be before they offer the dedicated app for Android.

Looks like that made my decision much easier on which direction and company to go with.
