HTC EVO vs Apple iPad Video

I have the iPAD and will be getting the Evo. I really dont care if one is a second faster than the other to be honest. Look at the difference in screen size. I watch movies and streaming video on the iPAD, would never do it on the Evo, screen is far too small. They both will serve different purposes for me though.

I agree, the Evo is a great smart phone but won't replace my iPad. It's going to be an awesome companion to stream content on the 4G network, which I have here in KC.

It is good to see the phone has a capable browser and speed for those times I use the phone. Each device serves it's purpose and each has it's advantages for what I want to use them for. If the network delivers on it promised speed it's going to make my iPad much more useable as the current ATT network I tether from is rather inconsistent. My current iPhone is used for phone calls, texts and tethering. The EVo is going to simply replace those functions on a faster network. My hotspot that can make calls and some bonus features all wrapped into one handy device.

Yea. You can also use your Evo to power your iPad on 4G :D

Awesome comparison. Now just imagine 2.2 with similar or (more than likely)better specs on an android tablet...

Or just wait for EVo root to be released, which is likely to give you the benefit of using Sprints 3G/4G as a hotspot with your ipad (without additional cost), giving your ipad access to the net on the go! Also I've heard a lot of ipad apps are dependent on internet access. For the time I've been with Sprint (ages) their 3G service is absolutely dependable.

Ya, I will look into rooting it eventually, but just like the iPhone the only reason I found to jailbreak it was for the tethering app. I honestly don't care about themes and such. I want the functionality features and considering what I pay now for ATT service, the hotspot feature is a no brainer. I read it's free for the first month, so good chance to see how well it works. If i Kansas City is as covered as I've heard in Wimax I'll be more than happy to pay for the service.

I love the iPad for viewing movies and streaming...iPad is the best way to view YouTube.

It's a lot of dough over 2 years, $720 + Tax. I'd rather do it for free on Froyo, but I don't have that Kansas City dough!

You may already know this, but when you describe Froyo as being "themes and such", I'm not so sure, so I'm going to post some of the things I like about Froyo.

It has improved cut and paste, big deal for me. Drop out menus, twitter support, improved app manager, better camera controls. Managing multiple gmail accounts easier is a big deal for, as I have separate business and personal email.

Also, your browsing experience should be better with Flash 10 and much better viewing of most things Java Script.

Don't get me wrong, if Sprint allows it for free via Froyo I'll have no issue with that. As far as rooting I wasn't referring specifically to Froyo but in general my past experience with jail breaking the iPhone. I work as an "1099 agent" for my company vs a W2 commissioned salesperson so I pay for my own business "tech". My job keeps me very mobile so in the scheme of things the $30 bucks per month is a drop in the bucket vs the benefit it can bring me. Freedom from the office to receive large files quickly to my laptop vs driving home, downloading and then going out again. I'm by no means rich, but I only get so many hours a day to do my job, so I can live with certain fees if it makes me more productive than $1 per day.

I honestly can't wait for Froyo, and think it will be pretty sweet to have access to the web with Flash 10.1 even if Hulu is blocked, which I do watch. I'm excited to see the Slingplayer app in beta as well. Bottom line, I want my gear to work, not have to mess with it, just work. If I find rooting is as easy as jail breaking and not have to mess with it I'll likely go that route. Just not familiar enough with the Android to make that call until I've used it a while.

BTW thanks for the tips on some of Froyo's features, I've only recently started to learn about Android when I was told KC was getting 4G. It's all very new to me so appreciate all the helpful responses and threads here.

for those of you with ipads, what is the advantage of having an ipad as opposed to a laptop...i have no clue about most apple products, and i've never considered an ipad bcuz i have a laptop....for me i care about what is most convenient to carry while serving a multitude of uses, which is why the evo will win out over my laptop in most cases unless i have some heavy business to do, in which case i'd use the laptop....do those with ipads, or even laptops for that matter carry those devices around on your person a majority of the time?

I like it because it's the latest and greatest gadget. I access my companies email and servers via Citrix, which has a native app for the iPad which I tried to use on the iPhone but it was just to small. The iPad has it's shortcoming but it handles my work email, Citrix sessions and the fact I do actually get 10+ hours of battery it lightweight makes it ideal for most of my daily tasks outside my home office. I use it all the time to read forums such as this one.

The larger screen and lack of keyboard were exactly what I was looking for in a portable media player. I've used many gadgets over the past 25 years since learning to program on a C64 and this is a great one for what it does, it does very well.

After seeing the Andriod 2.2 OS I would love to see a 10 or 12" Android tablet that had similar battery life with the perks of a more open platform, that could be a very powerful and expandable device.

Simple terms though, a laptop has more functions, especially on the creation side with a keyboard and the obvious use of a full OS. The iPad shines as a lightweight, portable media device for consuming content and some light work, such as email. My decision to buy one was for entertainment purposes and stumbled across some of the business related thing that actually let me use it in place of my laptop on a daily basis.

As to your last question about carrying it with me, yes it's with me for work, every day, every sales call and everywhere I go. I used to carry my laptop bag full of crap and now I have this iPad and my portfolio which is nearly the same size and it's rather awesome to only carry such a lightweight device that can do what I need.

As an iPad-owner-without-an-iPhone-considering-an-Evo, I like the following things about the iPad:

1. The iPad's form factor is much more convenient for reading books, large pdf files, long reports, etc. My job requires me to read several annual reports and other documents that are typically 150+ pages long, and I've always found laptops/monitors cumbersome for reading such documents. My pre-iPad solution was to print them, and the iPad eliminates this need. Plus, searchable highlighting and bookmarking are added bonuses. Saves me a ton on print cartridges, an unanticipated benefit.

2. It doesn't get hot like a laptop even after several hours of use.

3. Battery lasts 10 hours with continuous use. Plug it. Charge it. Forget it. (i.e. charge it every night the way I use it.)

4. Much better mobility -- you can pretty much tuck it under your arm and carry it around anywhere. Just like a book. The no-heat + long-battery-life makes a huge difference on this aspect as well. I wouldn't have believed this had someone told me this before I discovered through actual use.

5. It's much more instantaneous in terms of ignition-to-browsing than a laptop. It is almost as instantaneous as any smart phone.

6. Much less intrusive than a laptop in meetings and other settings where you would use a laptop. People in sales who have to show quick presentations / collateral at lunch meetings will understand why this is important.

7. Fantastic white-board -- if your job requires you to freehand draw charts, 2x2s, etc. to demonstrate concepts/ideas, this feature becomes very handy.

It is not a laptop replacement for me, as I need to create spreadsheets and long reports, for which the iPad is not really convenient. But I use the laptop now only for tasks that I can't do with an iPad. It's almost like comparing a knife to a pair of scissors. The knife (i.e. the laptop) can get pretty much everything done, but the scissors (iPad) are more suitable/convenient for certain tasks. So if you are a tailor, then ...

Also, ironically, I'm choosing an Evo over an iPhone precisely because of the iPad -- I need the wifi hotspot feature. To me, all the other Evo features are pleasant bonuses. Also, I don't see myself replacing the iPad with the Evo for the above-mentioned uses.

For me, iPad + Evo is pretty much a Godsend for my business needs. I rarely use my iPad for entertainment purposes. I can see using the Evo for that when I don't have access to anything else (e.g. watching ER at the doctor's office or the first episode of Lost while seated next to a nervous flyer waiting for the airplane to take-off... :D )
