Is n1 right for me?

So, I have been saving some tax return money and by the end of the month I should have 550$ roughly to spend.

I was holding out on a computer however, I am in college so I really can't afford to save much between rent and bills.. and I enjoy going out some.. Not bars or anything but, eating movies ect. So I don't get to save much, money stays in my "checking" account because it will inevitably be used.

I don't have much hope of saving up besides what I am given for birthdays/christmas/tax returns.

I have for a while eyed the nexus one and am considering finally jumping onboard.. Even if I got the computer I could use my tv as amonitor but, I would be missing the gfx card I want.. and with my impressions screen only becoming responsive with the keyboard out.. I am almost to a point that I should "move on" (sad because I got this from a friend and it just doesn't work as well anymore )

So with all that said.. I am a college student and stuck with at&t.. so I am not holding my breath for any android phone's much less anything on par with the N1. Even if there was a chance my upgrade isn't till march of next year.

I could definitely see the nexus one being just that.. A nexus installed into my life.. connecting me to my mail, schedule ect and connecting other people to this information. Especially if not during this sumer semester then definitely over the fall.

My first question would be, are there any glaring problems I should know about before I hop on board? I can handle imperfect 3g coverage, I've never had it at all before and my gf has a backflip so I have an idea of what to expect.. SO are there any major other issues that I should know of?

My Second question would be how durable is the screen? My girlfriends backflip seems to have a very high resistance to scratches. She has taken VERY good care of it in complete fairness to her.. However, my past phones have all scratched fairly easy.. 529$ is too much to pay for a phone I am going to have to really baby.. Drops happen in the real world accidental though they may be.. However, some phones I've had got scratched never being dropped once(lets face it.. some even if you take perfect care of it scratch).. So am I going to have to worry about marring my 529$ phone?

My third question is how big is the keyboard in landscape and portrait mode.. I played with a 4.3" phone recently and the keyboard was probably the BEST I have ever used on any phone.. My favorite so far has been the e71x because it was physical I wasn't as prone to "missing" once I got use to it.. However, with the 4.3" screen I had no problems typing easily.. it was even comfortable.. something I can't brag about with my current impression on any of its keyboards.

Finally.. I know I've mentioned this before.. and worried about it before.. however, do i need to worry about a 30$ data plan being tacted on? I have seen conflicted reports enough.. but, it is generally undiscussed.. I have even heard mixed reports here both ways.. My parents are paying the bill... and 10$ a month more is way diff than 30$

If you read this forums long enough I am sure you would get a good idea of any "glaring" problems. I guess I would say viewing the screen in bright light (other then that it is beautiful), battery life (just about any smartphone has this issue), the bottom "physical" keys have some touch issues (you will get use it real fast) and other then that I don't know what else is glaring. Phones like the Droid Incredible have better touch screens. The N1 uses the clearpad 2000 which has some issues (although I will argue that I haven't noticed the issues in day to day operations, while it may act up sometimes, it's not enough to bother me).

I have no idea how durable the screen is. From day one I have a zagg's screen protector on it and have no plans on taking it off. It does take away some of the feel of the screen (screen is baby smooth while the zaggs adds a bit of texture). I keep the phone in it's pouch and so far she is holding up well. I think the opposite of you, $529 is the reason I baby this phone, if it was cheaper I wouldn't care.

For the keyboard, go to the verizon store and try typing on the Droid Incredible, the screen is the same size, plus I am (so can you) using the droids keyboard which I like a lot better then the stock one.

Also since you are with At&t you might want to check out the new Samsung i897 (?)that is coming out. It suppose to have similar specs to the Galaxy S which I believe includes the better screen.

This phone uses a lot of data, you will be on it all the time.

And last but not least, would I get the phone again? With all the phones out on the current market (I will even include the EVO) the N1 is still my #1 choice. I love the way it looks, I love vanilla android, I love the specs, I love not being tied to a contract, and I am literally on it all day long (which is why my battery life isn't so good).

I've read about all of those, and I by no means expect any product to be perfect.. but, if it lives up to the other phone I played with.. I would have no problem with it.

ERmm Don't misunderstand me.. I am still going to baby it.. but, the reason I don't want to HAVE to is because if you don't have to baby and you do anyway.. then there should be 0 chance of scratch.. I in no way want to indicate I will be rough on it.. Well.. maybe with how much I put it though in terms of data useage..

I saw something about it.. it is interesting.. but, The nexus one is calling.. I don't have an upgrade until next feb.. and I am not using my parents..

And I must admit.. I love the way the n1 looks, and what I've heard about it.. I've only seen a few blurry screen shots of the samsung..

The nexus one seems to call to me a bit more.. Plus.. while it is my parents contract.. I really have no desire to renew and get a subsidized phone.. Even though I loved my e71x which was subsidized.. the fact that they require a data plan with it now and it is a toned down version of the unlocked version leaves me unhappy.. I never played with a real e71 but, the idea that I have to pay more in the long run for a device which has been weakened.. even slightly.. is a bit annoying.. Thank god it was grandfathered in before that mandatory update.

I am around wifi all the time.. so I'm not overly concerned with data useage.. even on at&t's 200 mb I should be good.

I have to disagree with that one! The Nexus One is only right for you if you're into Android and what Android has to offer, hate carrier bloatwares, don't want to be tied to a carrier with a contract around your neck, willing to put the up front cost for it and want to be one of the first to get Google's OTA releases

Its my parents contract so I'm not too concerned with that..

But, I gotta admit.. I hate "hacking" my phones just to get stupid apps off I didn't want on there in the first place.. especially when they aren't even really gone.. just invisible.. it didn't matter so much on the e71x but, on an app based phone thats more important...

I am definitely willing to put up cost though..

So.. If all goes well june 23rd.. I'll have joined the nexus

Didn't really read your post yet, but just wanted to say I have been using since it came out for att on the cheap data plan. Crossing my fingers it will continue. Good luck!

I bought an att n1 and have had no major problems that weren't my fault.
The keyboard inst as terrible as everyone makes it seem in my opinion, although i also had an e71x before the n1 and I do sometimes miss the physical keyboard on that phone (best keyboard I've used on a phone). However, just download a good keyboard replacement and you are golden.
The phone is unsubsidized so you dont need any data plan if you dont want, att will have no idea. I highly recommend one though because you will start using the phone as a mini laptop and don't want huge overage charges.

If you're not adverse to having a smartphone/MID combo unit, the Dell Streak is looking awfully nice, especially unlocked at $500...

Do those of you on the 10$ plan call and change your imei? or do you simply have a "dumbphone" that you give them the imei of?

I am only asking because I want to know what works best... I've seen some people give the imei and saying its a dumb phone.. even though it was the nexus one imei

ANd then I've seen some people give the imei from a dumb phone and then put the n1 sim chip in.

MID is a mobile internet device. Kinda halfway between a phone and a tablet. The Dell Streak is an Android powered smartphone, but is 5", which may be too large for some people.

On the otherhand, you're getting Snapdragon hardware for $500, and early impressions are that this is a really great device (though Dell has layered its own interface over Android - looks classy though)

If you're not totally against the idea of a 5" phone, I think the Streak is probably the most interesting/best Android phone for AT&T, currently.

I like the 4.3" android device I used... and I LOVE MIDS but, I wouldn't want anything bigger than what I already used as a phone.. (on a side note.. makes me wonder if people would use ipad as a phone if possible..)

While I am interested in the streak.. if its still a snapdragon... I feel like the n1 may be the better option.. N1 seems a bit tried and tested.. and even if its not AS easy to use as the 4.3" device.. I am willing to bet I'll get use to it soon enough.

The streak does look nice enough.. But, I think I'm sorta set on the nexus

The nexus one comes in two versions, a tmobile compatible version and an att compatible version. Obviously, the att version will work on att's 3g network, you just need to make sure that you pick up the correct one.
