i have a droid eris running android 2.1 and i want to root it so i can do cool stuff with it. can any one provide me with a simple and easy tutorial?
From looking around, I understande it that if we have done the upgrade thru the phone, 2.1 OTA, then we just do the same steps as you would if you had 1.5 to root your phone, correct?
Here is what I am going to do if it sounds correct, I already have the updated from verizon on my phone, 2.1 OTA. All I want is root, no extras at this point. So I am guessing that this is the correct steps from looking around? Also is this a one time load, I dont have to ever reload this over and over, or have the sd card in the slot to have root in the future? Thanks
- Place the PB00IMG.zip in the root of your sdcard
- Take the backup of all important data contacts synced with google will transfer over when you sign into your google account.
- Shut down phone
- Start phone with
This WILL NOT get you root. You will be flashing a leaked version of 2.1 if you do this. Read the sticky threads in this forum.
As long as you MAKE SURE that the PB00IMG.zip that you get is from the Root thread, specifically, this is the correct method for getting Root.
Unfortunately, getting Root with none of the extras really means nothing. The PB00IMG.zip that is the Root image itself is a version of Android 2.1 whose features are hardly equivalent to the Leak v1 (buggy, not finished yet).
What you'll want to do is go through ALL the steps in the Rooting process to install Recovery, and then put a ROM on.
You'll still want to install a ROM, but it doesn't have to be crazily custom. I recommend Ivan's Eris_Official 1.0. It's completely stock Sense UI, has 0 bugs, everything works NORMAL 100%, and just has the few extras you want (overclocking, wifi tether is easy to install, etc).
If you stick with the 2.1 that installs with PB00IMG.zip, then you will have a LOT of bugs, and still be missing just about ALL of the goodies that come with Rooting, and also have LESS functionality than even NON-root people (since it's such an early version of 2.1). The only thing that you'll be able to do is download a Terminal application, and then see a # instead of a $ (which doesn't get you very far, except for being able to remove apps that you don't want, and so on).
You need to install Recovery (it's really not that hard, use the Eris Master Application if it's back up), and you'll need to install a ROM. If you install Ivan's Eris_Official 1.0, you probably will NEVER need to flash another ROM, ever, unless Verizon/HTC releases something with lots of bug fixes. Then Ivan's Eris_Official 1.1 or whatever he'd release after that would be a consideration.
go here and jump down to the A. prerequisite part and follow along from there

you want to do everything, in order, from the link i posted. do everything, all of it, in order.
A. Pre-requisite: Android SDK
I. Rooting your phone (the easiest part)
II. Installing Amon's recovery image
III. Installing the new rooted ROM (this part is where you can choose from the roms listed here or at xda)
Just for my clarity, i like to be able to explain things later if I can, you first have to use the PB00IMG.zip to root your phone and then one you install a different rom it takes the place of PB00IMG.zip? Basicly puts a more stable rom in place of PB00IMG.zip? Thanks
And I can do this with 2.1 update from verizon already on my phone right?
kd7skx, I was in your boat about 2 weeks ago. I have verizon 2.1 OTA and only wanted to root so to be able to use Wifi Tether (Barnacle). I completed the Pre-Req's (with some difficulties: USB driver wont load) and then completed steps I & II but not step III (adding a new rom).
At this point, I am rooted and able to you WIfi Tether (Barnacle) but now I am having some other issues with my phone. Google Maps is having issue. Whenever I use it to get directions it force closes & I am unable to update it. It tells me, "Google Maps installation unsuccessful" "Package file was not signed correctly"
And I had several Storm8 games "World War" & "iMobster" which no longer work after I have rooted the phone.
So at this point I'm torn, I really wanted Wifi Tether but it has caused some problems that I hope someone can help me with.
mbrudolph,
There is not a single experienced rooter on this board who will advocate using the ROM you are complaining about. Not one.
Look at the software version number - it pre-dates even Leak-V1!
And no-one uses that, either.

Can you assist me then? My software number is 2.19.605.1 what is that telling me??
Which ROM do i select if I want it as close to the stock OTA rom but able to wifi tether?
Ivanmj's "Official 1.0"
Thank You!! Lets see if this solve the problems.
You should spend a little time familiarizing yourself with the Amon_RA recovery utility - making backups and so forth. Then go ahead and load a much better (nearly-stock) ROM than what you are using.
