Root so um how do i do this?

i have a droid eris running android 2.1 and i want to root it so i can do cool stuff with it. can any one provide me with a simple and easy tutorial?

This WILL NOT get you root. You will be flashing a leaked version of 2.1 if you do this. Read the sticky threads in this forum.

As long as you MAKE SURE that the PB00IMG.zip that you get is from the Root thread, specifically, this is the correct method for getting Root.

Unfortunately, getting Root with none of the extras really means nothing. The PB00IMG.zip that is the Root image itself is a version of Android 2.1 whose features are hardly equivalent to the Leak v1 (buggy, not finished yet).

What you'll want to do is go through ALL the steps in the Rooting process to install Recovery, and then put a ROM on.

You'll still want to install a ROM, but it doesn't have to be crazily custom. I recommend Ivan's Eris_Official 1.0. It's completely stock Sense UI, has 0 bugs, everything works NORMAL 100%, and just has the few extras you want (overclocking, wifi tether is easy to install, etc).

If you stick with the 2.1 that installs with PB00IMG.zip, then you will have a LOT of bugs, and still be missing just about ALL of the goodies that come with Rooting, and also have LESS functionality than even NON-root people (since it's such an early version of 2.1). The only thing that you'll be able to do is download a Terminal application, and then see a # instead of a $ (which doesn't get you very far, except for being able to remove apps that you don't want, and so on).

You need to install Recovery (it's really not that hard, use the Eris Master Application if it's back up), and you'll need to install a ROM. If you install Ivan's Eris_Official 1.0, you probably will NEVER need to flash another ROM, ever, unless Verizon/HTC releases something with lots of bug fixes. Then Ivan's Eris_Official 1.1 or whatever he'd release after that would be a consideration.

From looking around the stickies, all I can find is instructions similar to this, all with the same file that is apparently the "leak" file. Where is the thread that tells us how to root our phones without using the so called leak file. I can not find the OTA root file that is supposedly alluding a lot of us. I am comfortable perfoming this task, but would at least like to have some confirmation that I have the correct files.

Do exactly what Caddyman said. Start at A, followed by I, II, and III. You must do all of the steps, in that order, in order for it to work correctly. You can't just "flash a different ROM instead of PB00IMG.ZIP." You have to start with PB00IMG.ZIP, and you have to make sure you're using the right one.

Within part III, I recommend substituting the ROM mentioned with Eris_Official 1.0, which can be obtained here:

Yes. Let me add one more detail though: there are 6 different versions of the file PB00IMG.ZIP from HTC, 4 of which can flash your phone in its' present condition - and 3 out of those 4 will lock you out of obtaining root, possibly forever. For the benefit of others that might read your posts, always refer to the "root" version of the file as "the root version of PB00IMG. ZIP", so that you don't create the false impression that there is only one file named PB00IMG. ZIP wandering around on the internet.

An even better practice for you to adopt is to install a tool on your PC which allows you to check the "md5sum" of files you download. The MD5 checksum of the root-PB00IMG.ZIP file is 63eacc5ede3b179f95dc22d8ef585f94.

You can download the Root-PB00IMG.ZIP file from GrdLock's site, and can find md5sum tools for the PC on Cnet's download site.

And I can do this with 2.1 update from verizon already on my phone right?

To my knowledge, there has only been a single report of a failure using this method with an OTA-2.1 phone, and many reports of success. (Even in the one failed case, nothing bad happened to the phone; the method just didn't "take". )

At this point, I am rooted and able to you WIfi Tether (Barnacle) but now I am having some other issues with my phone. Google Maps is having issue. Whenever I use it to get directions it force closes & I am unable to update it. It tells me, "Google Maps installation unsuccessful" "Package file was not signed correctly"

And I had several Storm8 games "World War" & "iMobster" which no longer work after I have rooted the phone.

So at this point I'm torn, I really wanted Wifi Tether but it has caused some problems that I hope someone can help me with.

PLEASE re-read pkopalek's post in this same thread, where he explains that the version of the ROM that ships with the root-ROM is a piece of $hit.

That is the reason why all of the instructions on this site tell you to load the recovery and then load a new ROM. None of those instructions tell you, "just pick and choose whatever steps you please and the results will be the same. "

You didn't complete the install, so you shouldn't come in here complaining that root is buggy.

Your driver doesn't install?

FIX THAT PROBLEM FIRST AND THEN FINISH THE INSTRUCTIONS AS THEY ARE GIVEN.

OUCH!! Wasnt complaining and if you go into the thread that gives the instructions I have numerous questions and even more responses telling me that step three is only necessary if you are using the All In One Root install. If you complete the root process manually it would not change the 2.1 OTA rom which was on already on my phone.

Also yes there WAS numerous problems with the USB driver not being recognized but obviously that was solved or I would have never been able to ROOT.

So before you start flaming someone about not following directions make sure you realize I have asked numerous other and was told repeatedly in the Root thread that step 3 isnt necessary unless you are doing the All In One Root install.

So my newest question is WHO IS RIGHT??

Look at the software version number - it pre-dates even Leak-V1!

And no-one uses that, either.

OK, If you are curious where the HTC root-ROM was in comparison to other "Leaks", have a look at this post:

It seems that the root-ROM ( v 2.19.605.1 ) was a very, very early testing release of 2.1 on the Eris - full of bugs, as you discovered.


There are a couple of ROMs that are very close to "Stock" OTA-2.1 HTC/VZW releases. The reason that I suggested Ivanmmj's Official 1.0 (download link is about 2/3rds of the way down the page) is that that's the one I use day-to-day. Rock solid (just like pkopalek said above).

I think that jcase's Plain Jane is very similar, and, based on the chronology of events (specifically zanfur's outstanding OC analysis work), that it may have a slightly better OC'ing implementation that "Official 1.0". I just haven't used it yet, so I don't know if "better or worse" is a question I could answer.


You should spend a little time familiarizing yourself with the Amon_RA recovery utility - making backups and so forth. Then go ahead and load a much better (nearly-stock) ROM than what you are using.

I'd like to say thank you again. Clearly the numerous others had led me down the wrong path in the other thread. At this point the rom you recommend has solved my problems. And you are right I will be trying out other roms. Thanks
